Let's be real the best pop punk album is take this to your grave and it's really just okay as an album. that was the peak of that scene, it was so mediocre

 

people don't often talk about the change in lyrics from tttyg to cork tree. Pete got way more introverted and lashed out externally less

 

how do you even grow as a band playing only pop punk? its a genre so strict in what defines it that any slight push of creativity changes it, whether its alt rock, emo, or just straight pop

at that point you just redo the same 12 songs over and over again

 

Take This To Your Grave is the only FOB album I actually don't like.

 

I think it depends what is considered "pop-punk". Ocean Avenue is better than TTTYG but it's more diverse and expands beyond the typical genre boundaries.

And The Upsides is the best pop-punk album

 

TTTYG has some jams but I come back to it the least out of all the albums

I can't remember the last time I listened to it in full

Ocean avenue isn't that good. Neither is the upsides but that's a much later pop punk scene. But notice it doesn't sound stylistically different than pop punk from a decade prior because the genre is completely stagnant

 

Paper Walls and Gospel are my two favorite Pop Punk records and even those are not really pop punk

I can't believe the story so far has recorded more than three songs. They all sound exactly the same

 

at least early 00s pop punk was a little different than 90s pop punk. nothing since has been interesting because the second a band does something interesting they're no longer pop punk. because pop punk fans are fucking fickle and hate change

 

Kind like how New Found Glory is as good as they ever were but not any better.

Bayside seems stuck on the same genre and song writing also (though I love all their stuff, it's just not as exciting when they release something new)

 

Gun to head I couldn't tell you between The Story So Knuckle Friends State Deep Champs or whatever all those bands are. I would just be like shoot me.

 

I've always hated new found glory. I like baysides first four albums but they weren't really pop punk. They were more emo punk like alkaline trio

 

I have a friend that probably only knows the post hiatus records outside of singles prior to the hiatus and Wilson is her favorite song and I find that so interesting. Maybe because it is one of my least favorites on this record. I love this though. It certainly reminds me more of IOH and Folie than anything else but I can't pin why.

 

Seems like most bands that are pop-punk either move on after a couple albums or just never change.

Would you call Motion City Soundtrack pop-punk?

The only thing more boring than pop-punk is the discussions around pop-punk.

 

i don't think take this to your grave, much as i love it, is even as good as the records that inspired it i.e. jersey's best dancers and four minute mile and etc.

whether these records are pop-punk is something i've gotten yelled at about

 

I mean in general the wave before TTTYG pop punk was probably better but not the pop punk I'm talking about. Like Dookie is probably the real peak

Man, some people really don't like pop-punk in this thread.

For sure there is bad pop-punk that sounds samey and doesn't push boundaries or leave a lasting impact, but that's true for any genre. There's some really good stuff in there as well.

And are we not classing FUTCT as pop-punk? Not that it matters much, but it always struck me as a progression of the sound from the first record rather than a departure or being too different. Maybe I need to relisten though...
