Wait did I seriously see a post that said pop-punk is closer in style to jazz and classical music than hip-hop/edm?
The thing is though - these lyrics are awful. Soo much repetition and not in a good way. Feels incomplete. So did young and menace. As one of the last mainstream "rock" acts left, I'm always rooting for them but they certainly don't make it easy.
Actually, now that I come to think of it, are there any pop-punk bands that even close to incorporate those influences without venturing into math-pop-punk? Kinda curious now hahaha
just because some people said they didnt like it because it was different doesnt mean other people's reasons are illegitimate lol. but lets keep building these strawmen
This is less "influence" and more "sampling," but aren't the backing strings of The Phoenix taken from a classical song? EDIT: Wikipedia tells me it's the fourth movement of Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7. So that's something I guess.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure people did, but a lot of the comments here are based on the assumption that everyone who doesn't like this, didn't like that because it was different. I just didn't like it cause I personally didn't think it was good at all, and that seems to be the case of the majority of those who disliked it.
I don't think anyone is saying "everyone" ... but it's all over reddit, and Twitter ... like, it is actually happening. Haha.
I get the frustation of those people, but I don't really get what people like that hope to achieve. Personally I haven't really enjoyed new Fall Out Boy has put out at all, but it's clear they have moved on, and I'll generally at least listen once to anything they put out before I decide. I don't what a poster on /r/poppunkers thinks they can achieve by moaning about it not sounding like Take This To Your Grave ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Haha, me either. I'm more surprised when people around my age still really like that album. Didn't age well IMO.
Nostalgia. I'm only 24 and I don't ever really listen to it, or Fall Out Boy in general, much, but it's a decent nostalgia trip and some songs (mainly Grand Theft Autumn) are pretty fun still. Some of the lyrics definitely put me off, and it sounds very much like a product of the early 2000's.
I honestly just think the songs are boring and bad, I could care less about "selling out" or whatever hand wringing that comes out when this band puts out new music.
I've got this game-changing pop album I want to show you. You probably haven't heard of it, but it's called A Rush of Blood to the Head.
