Second listen, I think I actually like it. Even without knowing what the album sounds like, this is a pretty cool opener. Only real complaint now is that the transitions from the chorus back into the softer parts are kinda awkward sounding to me.
I definitely wouldn't say this is the worst song ever. It's very left field though. After hearing interviews of Patrick and Pete talking about this song in depth, I can appreciate it more. Pete said it's the most far left song on the album and it was a song Patrick had as a demo and they liked how different it was, so they were basically like "why not?". They knew it was going to cause a big/good/bad reaction.
I listened to it a few times to see if it would grow on me, but yeah it's not working. I'd be totally cool with never hearing this song again.
I really like how this is the opener for an album called MANIA. I think the chorus really fits that crazy/scattered vibe and I think it's gonna do a really good job setting up the rest of the album.
I just want to point out that there are some of us that genuinely don't think this is a good song, and the people complaining about lack of guitars/drums/live presence are making us look bad.
Totally fair. It sucks that it's so easy to be lumped into the group of people saying dumb things when you just don't like something.
Yea obviously it's ok to not like a song, and I won't even say you need a reason for that. It's just really tiring to have to hear the same baseless insults thrown against the band (and also Paramore and Panic!) every album cycle (not real instruments, selling out - more recently replaced by "this is just pandering to radio", or wow this sounds like every mainstream song - when clearly these songs don't). I think people's patience when it comes to those criticisms is long out the window. And if someone hasn't enjoyed the last 2 FOB albums, I don't get why they would think that's going to change now, and to keep getting mad about it is really irritating for people who DO enjoy the new material. In other words, it sucks because a small but vocal group kind of ruins it for everyone and makes these discussions more angry than they need to be.
Yeah haha I'm always super baffled when I see something like "I thought FOB was gonna go back to TTTYG/FUCT sound" and I'm like uhhh....really??
this opinion could be potentially hampered by how little i listen to radio but i don't feel like "young and menace" is necessarily aligned with radio edm; it maybe most resembles some cut-up collagist thing skrillex would've made a few years ago that might've broken through, but most pop-edm at the moment is excessively smooth and hungover ime (thanks bieber/chainsmokers) when i described this song as "weird" yesterday i of course meant "weird for fob"
Yea exactly. I honestly don't get the comparisons to radio at all. This doesn't sound like anything I hear on the radio. I definitely would not call that chorus EDM. It's way more aggressive than any popular EDM right now. I think people just associate any electronic element with radio/edm, which is not the truth.
Okay I just listened to it again and Uma Thurman is fine and all, but I definitely like Young and Menace more.
My 4 1/2 year old likes it when "the kids sing" in the chorus, haha. This song is definitely growing on me. The chorus was the only wtf moment for me at first, but I kind of dig it now.
Fall Out Boy discuss 'extreme' new single 'Young And Menace' and their 'political' new album 'M A N I A' - NME According to this interview the album is halfway done which explains why it isn't out for another 4 months but it's sorta strange to announce it if it isn't finished imo
