Menace is actually one of my favorite tracks as well. They really lose it a bit in the middle of the record.
For the record: Sunshine Riptide and The Last Of The Real Ones are tied for my favorite songs on the album. The massive sound and vocal productions are probably the reason, but the melodies and lyrics are tight too.
Upon first listen, it's meh - probably my least liked FOB album overall. Some good songs, but overall not great. Hopefully it'll grow on me.
Me neither, but if you’re not a fan of that more soul/r & b sound I could could see people zone out during that 1-2 punch and since they already heard Champion, completely lose em. Def not my experience though haha
My main issue is the lyrics. I know Pete can do so much better than “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color” and “eau de resistance.” They just remind me of cringworthy lyrics a kid would come up with and put on their MySpace or AIM profile back in the day. Not saying all the lyrics are bad but those are some that stood out to me as poor upon first listen, but I am someone who finds the lyrics important in how much I end up liking a song, and know that isn’t the case of everyone.
I find the lyrics on this to repeat themselves way more than on previous records. a lot of repeating a couple lines to make a verse. second listen in the car on the way home, i'm liking it more. some really great stuff on here
Pete will never top this goldmine of lyrical WIT: "Supra and the prophet are both in the business of souls"
Dude I was just gonna post apologizing for how much I've been blowing up people's notifications lmao... this is such an enjoyable first listen right now, got off work to the album having leaked.
For people who say Church and Heaven's Gate are where the album loses them... I'm sorry but... are your ears functioning correctly because WOW THE FUCKING BRIDGE OF HEAVEN'S GATE FUUUUUCK
“i’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color” is an addams family paraphrase, and an excellent lyric
