I find it really weird how much the band is actively against making guitar-based rock, besides Joe. I want to know from their perspectives. I like Mania, I think it's the best of the three post-hiatus records, but none of them even come close to TTTYG, FUTCT, IOH, and especially Folie (imo).
Yeah I'm honestly confused on why they apparently keep pushing it aside if it seems like what most of them want to do besides maybe Patrick
Always shocked that MANIA is so controversial. I think it’s worlds better than either of their other post-hiatus albums
I think a big part is because the first two singles are probably the worst two tracks, by far, so it's the deeper cuts that make the album actually shine
If the two singles weren’t on it it’d be damn near their best album. Those two singles make it very middle of the road though
I absolutely love Young and Menace (it might be my favorite song on the record) but I get that it is divisive.
I don't get why bands like this who have superfans from their older stuff can't throw a couple older sounding songs in with the sound they're going for and mixing it up. But, artists can do what speaks to them.
Personally I think their next album should be EDM/dubstep, I think that would go over really well with people
I’m surprised they haven’t just put out like a more guitar focused EP or something if he’s unhappy enough this their recent output that he’s mentioned it a couple times now.
IMO the last “guitar rock” thing they did, the EP with the creep, is by far their worst sounding collection of songs since ‘Evening Out.’
Yeah I wish that EP was good. Conceptually, it should be something I love to death. FOB doing fast short punk songs? Hell yeah! Unfortunately, the songs themselves just aren't very good.
I listened to the RS podcast and the article misses some context on the rock songs they were working on. He said life got in the way during the process of those songs, including his back surgery in December, and were placed on the back burner as a result. They still exchange ideas and are always writing but don’t have anything recorded. He was very blunt about how frustrated he was that the original MANIA songs were scrapped without discussion and that they were going to follow the formula of the last two albums. Sucks.
Wilson is an all-timer for me. “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color” would have killed in the away messages era.
Pete and Patrick have made it clear they’re pretty set on the course fall out boy has taken post hiatus and I doubt they would feel artistically fulfilled if they did what Joe is suggesting, which sucks because it doesn’t sound like Joe is artistically fulfilled and that’s why people usually leave bands, but I guess it’s worth it to him to stay and contribute regardless of if it’s what he really wants to be doing.
I think I prefer Pete's parts post-hiatus, but that shouldn't come at Joe's expense, I'm sure they could reach a compromise where both have interesting parts to play. Pretty often in pop-punk the bass is just playing the root notes of the guitar chords and that's not fun either.
Yeah I'm sure they could mix guitars back in while still exploring the newer stuff they've been doing. They don't have to revert to sounding like their old stuff.
