The domestic abuse sub plot felt so shoehorned and Will as a character in general felt so underbaked and forced that it really took a lot out of the final act for me, and this is not even getting into the whole Terminator villain comparison. I still had a lot of fun with this one and was totally on board with Vanicek’s flavor (I knew as soon as the fish hooks got stuck in the dudes face that he had the chops for an ED film in the gore and violence). Just didn’t click nearly the way I had hoped it would. Will still be seated for Wrath of course.
I think I could’ve gotten on board with this like some of you have if it wasn’t for the writing/dialogue/delivery and how it looked.
Those are criticisms I just don't get haha. The color-grading maybe, the surface-level abuse storyline maybe, but I thought the performances were great and had zero issues with the dialogue
I don’t disagree with that, but I also just think all of the last three feel that way. The entire sequence where the friends meet at the cabin in 2013 especially is very stiff. It’s almost become a bit to me how corny and unassuming these movies start and how quickly they crank it to 10
They both felt like extremely cardboard cut-out characters of things we’ve seen before: The woman with trauma from abuse who gets the shit beat out of her until she gets the blow at the final minute and the old lady who exists to just be possessed. At least in a Raimi “Evil Dead,” the Deadite grandma would have done something silly before killing someone.
no disrespect to anyone who didn't enjoy this, but aside from the animal abuse scene and dagger subplot, i had a pretty great time with this. for me personally, i felt like its weaknesses and strengths traded off with Rise, but in a way i still enjoyed. would probably put it on par with Rise maybe higher (OG and 2013 are still my favorites).
my partner walked away with this being his personal favorite of the six. while i don't share that opinion, i get why he enjoyed it. we'll probably have to watch Infested next.
I thought it was fine, about as good as rise maybe a little less with the ending being not as strong. Some weak writing moments, you can't have two deadites say the main character liked being abused, and pretty close after each other. Maybe they should have given her more backstory so they could have a second thing to taunt her about? When it was trying to do cool stuff it was cool, when it was just like a regular horror movie it was mid.
Anyway, I was coming up with fake Evil Dead titles after, some of my favs Evil Dead Cruise (cruise ship) Evil Dead Slam (wrestling, or, perhaps even more fun, basketball) Evil Dead Live (you think it's pronounced one way, but its actually a concert) Evil Dead Slay Evil Dead Sleigh Evil Dead Speed Evil Dead Bleed Evil Dead Dream Evil Dead Rave
we went with our friends (both married to each other), one of whom hadn't seen them in years (but had seen all of them), and the other who hadn't seen any up until he and his husband (the other friend) watched Rise last night. they both really liked this one too.
Yeah, the two friends we went with watched Rise for the first time the night before and enjoyed it, but liked this one a lot more. I don't think it's THAT much better or anything, just find it interesting. I don't think there's a dud in the franchise yet.
Joseph’s face being smashed into Thia’s smashed up face was the most hardcore thing I’ve seen in a long time. More of that shit please lol Let me know if this needs to be spoiler tagged pls
Sébastien Vaniček said somewhere that they had to trim a scene down or remove a scene in order to avoid a NC-17 rating, and now i'm wondering which scene it was. i don't think it was Joseph being forced upon Thya's remains, but something like that definitely didn't help. edit: he told Dread Central it involved a head. now i'm wondering if it was Thya, Susan, Jessica, or Edgar.
me too. certainly didn't help that i got my ears pierced a few days ago, but i didn't need to imagine any more ear pain.
Upside down smiling deadite in the car has kinda been burned into my retinas. Pretty potent example of the dynamic this movie strikes with the immensely creepy static shot followed immediately by a very silly excited “we found you!”
