Really really loved this but was distracted by the woman 2 seats to my right that 1: had a tiny dog that wasn’t barking or anything but was climbing back and forth from the woman’s lap to her friend’s lap and 2: the fact that before the movie started I found a theater employee and said “hey man, there’s a DOG in here” and they didn’t do anything about.
I’m gonna go see it again soon though.

I think I need to see this again because even though I liked the performances, editing, effects, there was something inexplicably off-putting to me about the first hour that I couldn’t quite get into it as much as others. I also saw it late with a dead crowd.

Like it has that “Scott Pilgrim”/“Big Trouble In Little China”/“Kung Fu Hustle” tone that I love, but it wasn’t quite hitting for me until it was about halfway through.

For sure, though, Jonathan Ke Quan with the comeback of the year.

This reminded me a lot of watching Legion. I looked it up and Daniel Kwan directed an episode. Makes perfect sense.

I disagree because it wasn’t just a joke that they went back to - they successfully build on it each time. First it’s a cliche one-off joke of a mom forgetting the name of a contemporary piece of pop culture. Then it’s a literal representation of how absurd the multiverse can get. Then it has the emotional turn along with the rest of the film, and became a symbolic representation of the main theme/conflict.

I'm watching it again tonight so I'll see how I feel, maybe you're right

  19. If anyone has gone back to that joke a time or two too many, it’s me obnoxiously to my girlfriend since seeing this last Thursday

truly doesn't feel like hyperbole to say this is one of my favorite movie viewing experiences ever

Seeing this in theaters is second only to when i saw Annihilation in theaters, in terms to how important the theater felt to the viewing.

I'm a little surprised this didn't have a bigger opening. $6 million is nothing to scoff at, but the by theater average is kinda underwhelming. Guess everyone was seeing Sonic.

A couple minor things that nag at me:
•Near the end there’s a line or two about the Evelyn and Joy being estranged and not seeing each other much. I don’t remember there being any other reference to that before-hand? It had always seemed like Joy was part of the family business and if anything kind of stuck/constrained by it

•The extent of AlphaJoy’s powers — is she completely omniscient, basically? Or can she only see/experience things that other versions of herself can see/experience? I had figured it was the latter, but then why have moments like the husband blocking the security camera with the umbrella? And the universes where Evelyn never had Joy seemed to basically be safe havens from her?

•AlphaJoy’s cronies — where did they come from? How did she recruit them? They blocked their faces from the bagel, which seems to imply that Joy wasn’t letting them see it? But then how did they learn about the multiverse themselves, not to mention why would they join the side of AlphaJoy once they did?

Box Office Mojo seemed pretty optimistic:

It seems pretty on par for A24 in a post-quarantine world. Low budget, long running time, non-IP movie without a megastar, I’d say it did decent and might be good counterprogramming next week against Fantastic Beasts. At the very least, it didn’t bomb like “Ambulance.”

They should have done more to promote that Short Round was a main character. They would have sold out showings nationwide
