Yea, I liked Curtis in this a lot, but Hsu makes the movie. Otherwise very happy with how this cleaned up.

For a second, I thought this became the 4th film to win the big five, but then I remembered Ke won supporting. Pretty damn close though.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this movie for all its success last night, but even after a 2nd viewing, I don't quite get the love and am amazed it went from a weird cult, indie darling, to critical acclaim and an awards sweep. I personally think it was too long, poorly paced and the message repeated ad nauseum and harped on over and over again like it was incredibly complex, deep or unique. Both my wife and I said afterwards that we got the point well before the movie thought we got the point, and it kept on going, saying the same thing in a multitude of ways. Humor is subjective, but it also didn't land on all fronts as far as just being fun (plus if that's the bar for an Oscar now, lets get cocaine bear up there next year).

It was weird, it was unique, it was imaginative, it was spectacularly made on a tight budget, but despite all that, I'm surprised it won the esteemed honor of best picture. This might be one of those cases where I built it up too much (still probably the best trailer I think I've ever seen), but the actual movie was a letdown for me.

And come on... was Jamie Lee Curtis really that impressive in it? I feel like she just did what the script asked of her. Replace her with anyone, and the movie still probably works at the same level. I think this last part is maybe the only part I'll get agreement on, especially since she was nominated against an arguably better actress from the same movie.

I have been meaning to rewatch it, I wasn’t big on it on my first viewing. I liked it and the performances are incredible. I liked how weird it was with stuff like the rock scenes, yet also touching. I think it struck a decent balance there. I would agree it’s probably too long. I think it won a lot of people over with its heart. Strained relationships between parent and child is essentially universal to every person ever. Everyone has a parent or parental figure as children. That heart of film can speak to anyone, even if the multiverse stuff loses them a little bit. In that regard, it’s a highly effective movie. I absolutely think Hsu was robbed. Curtis was not integral to the movie they way Hsu was.

I’m probably gonna rewatch it soon, finally.

I think the general consensus is that it was a lifetime achievement award for JLC. Dumb, but not all that uncommon at the Oscars.

  19. could've just as easily given that "lifetime achievement award" to Angela Bassett, but we can't have 3/4 acting winners be poc
