It follows that Rick and Morty formula of outlandishness followed by an attempt at emotion but instead of a 22 minute episode it is multiple hours of repetition.

It felt like walking back into Hot Topic. Hot dog fingers is the kind of joke we would have made in 8th grade.

This website is so fucking weird. Comparing this to Rick and Morty is the most disingenuous shit

yeah I can see how that would be true as well. There's a lot this does that separates it but there's also a lot of stuff they both share that I can see putting some people off. I happen to love both.

I likewise loved this and really do not vibe with Rick & Morty at all, though I can pretty easily see the overlap there.

I also see how this would be exhausting for some people and, if anything, am surprised that it caught on as much as it did. As much as this was very much so "my hole! It was made for me!" ...I don't fault anyone for bouncing off its maximalist absurdity with a deeply earnest core.

My biggest critism of the film is that it used high concept absurdity to say the safest thing a film can say,"family matters". Its not the only way to look at art but one way is, is it saying something interesting in an interesting way?, the worst art say something boring in a boring way.
I enjoyed this and all the technical aspects, writing, humour, action etc were all good but it misses out on being a top tier film for me.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I think the message is a bit more complex than that personally. that's not inaccurate, but this movie has a lot to say about how nihilism is a disease and the connections we make (not just family, friends, former enemies who look like Jamie Lee Curtis etc) help keep it at bay

I think the second best type of art says something true to life in an interesting way, which is what EEAAO does but it also says the most chiche truth in film. It does a great job with interesting themes and concepts but in the end they arnt really engaged with and just serve the purpose of an antagonist to be defeated by the message that the main charater monologues while they turn the music up.

I wouldn’t claim that the themes are the most unique in all of film, but your read of the movie… is pretty bad? Like, if you’re seeing “an antagonist to be defeated,” then you’ve really lost the thread.

This is just a family drama about losing touch with each other and reasons to live.

I think its really well done from an emotional and character standpoint, even if some of the action and humor can fall into a category that I wouldn't say is cringe itself, but definitely attracts some cringe fans.

So it might be a little overrated but still one of my favorite movies of the year, I think it was fourth on my list.

Still haven’t seen it since the theater but didn’t love it. I also had a shitty theater experience.

I understand the criticisms of this being too exhausting or feeling overstuffed. On my last rewatch I definitely felt as if some of the action scenes in the first half could be trimmed and maybe some of the humor didn't land all that well (using dildos to beat someone felt like a pretty uninspired gag for example). But I consider this to be a minor flaw.

I can't speak to how well it compares in execution to Rick & Morty. I watched the first two seasons of it and enjoyed it, but not enough to keep going. They both have themes of nihilism, but I appreciate the more reconciliatory and accepting approach this film takes.

At the end of the day, this movie and Bo Burnham's Inside are the two pieces of art that have best captured the overwhelming feelings of the internet age.

Based off of the comic series of the great Gene Luen Yang, the writer who did the last 2 years of Shang-Chi comics as well as several The Last Airbender graphic novels.
