I got into ETID pretty early on in High School with Hot Damn! but it was Gutter Phenomenon that really made me the fan I still am today. It’s funny because I remember years ago Keith saying how much he dislikes that record because the production is awful and I never got it… until I put the record on recently. He’s right. Shit sounds stuffy and the drum tones are awful. I would absolutely love if Putney had them re-record the songs. Maybe they will for a 20 year anniversary!
Truth be told - I don’t think the production on their records were fully realized until Will Putney came into the mix. I think Radical is their best sounding record to date.
My vinyl purchasing has decreased drastically over the last couple of years but now when I order one I've already mentally acknowledged that I'm making an investment for the future and that one day I'm going to get a square package in the mail and have no idea what record it is bc it's been so long
Got into ETID with Gutter because of that Gerard feature. Fell off a little until NJA, which gave me my favorite ETID song in Wanderlust. Didn't get too much into the next two albums but this and Low Teens have blown my head off and I love them all the way through. Should probably do a discog run and give the stuff I've passively listened to another chance.
The little flashes of sounds from previous records are great - I am particularly partial to the Ex Lives sounding bits. I also agree with this statement. This record everything sounds full - nothing feels missing or weak. They haven't sounded better.
Behind Blue Eyes: The Radical rebirth of Keith Buckley — Kerrang! Good read - really interesting to hear Keith's takes on marriage and alcoholism.
I will say it til I’m blue in the face- Putney’s production utilizes all of the space in the production. The screams that are far away, the left-right panning, the guitar tones…it’s what made that debut EP from END so huge
This album is a breath of fresh air. ETID Really outdid themselves. Keith’s lyrics have always been the biggest draw for me. “I got a devil inside 6669” nice
I’m a Kurt Ballou fanboy and imo it’s not even close how much better low teens and radical sound than the rest of their albums, including fpu
I think FPU is up there with them, Kurt's production really nailed the sound they were going for on it imo, but for more traditional sounding ones yea Low Teens and especially Radical are the top ones
Low Teens production was kind of off putting for me at first but I came around to it (mainly the drum sound, which is odd because I normally love Putneys drum sounds). Radical sounds fantastic. Especially the breakdowns on this, Putney makes them sound MASSIVE.
As someone who would definitely consider Gutter Phenomenon the album I have enjoyed the most of all (at it’s time), I do distinctly remember being disappointed at how the album sounded, especially having had access to some demos leading up to its release and greatly enjoying it (Guitarred and Feathered being one). That said it’s definitely the ETID album that holds up the least, but it wasn’t until Ex-Lives until I personally considered it bested.
