    NJA definitely

  2. Ex Lives no question. The shift from TBD to NJA was nowhere near as large

Ex-Lives. First album that Ratboy wasn't a part of and its easy to tell because the drumming had become stagnant. If you watch old YouTube vids, a lot of the songs had been slowed down live. Legs helped bring a fresh perspective to the band, and they seemed reinvigorated

NJA was their first on epitaph which is why it ushered in the new era (it was also when i discovered them)

    I think NJA

  9. False, that was a huge jump. There's songs on New Junk and Ex Lives that could have been on either or.

No he left shortly after the recording of NJA. They found Ryan Leger through his YouTube play through of The Marvelous Slut

  11. Are you sure? I could have sworn he was out after TBD because he didn't want to go heavier and then they got legs and did NJA.

I'm positive lol. They put out a DVD with NJA and Ratboy isn't depicted in the most positive of lights haha

I honestly couldn't not disagree more haha. I think the biggest departure from previous material on NJA is the opener.

Partying, Wild Shameless, Revival Mode, Drag King, Indian Giver... I just don't see any of those songs as something that could have been potentially written during the NJA era.

Drums were also a maaaajor improvement from NJA to EL. I wasn't even aware they switched drummers at the time but immediately noticed the difference haha

Confirming that Legs joined after NJA.

I'd agree with Ex Lives being the shift in question and I think a lot of it has to do with Ratboy's departure. Legs brought such a refreshed energy that ushered in a lot of experimentation, touching upon an overall more chaotic sound in a lot of places. Songs like Holy Book of Dilemma or The Low Road Has No Exits would never have been pulled off the same with Ratboy behind the kit and that goes even further for some of the songs off of FPU.

Besides the difference in musical direction, it definitely seems like by NJA, there was a growing distance between Ratboy and the band personally too. I think that lineup change just reinvigorated the band altogether. And while you'd think Legs leaving could be a potential problem, as we all know, Daniel Davison just so happens to be an absolute monster, so there was no hiccup at all in that transition from FPU to LT.

You might have been thinking of Josh Newton, since he recorded bass on NJA and Ex-Lives.

They probably started to realise it more on Ex-Lives and changing drummer definitely made a difference, but I think NJA was at least a kind of transitional point.

Yeah wanderlust and even stuff like the sweet life could be considered. Plus it feels like Keith really came into his own vocally

Let the records show that autocorrect tried to turn the word "vocally" into "fuckally"

Agreed on Wanderlust, but that song doesn't speak for the entire record. And I'd argue that a brand new band member would influence ther sound far more than a label would haha.

Not to mention Ex Lives was their first time (correct me if I'm wrong) including a prominent new instrument on a song, and trying out some guitar/vocal effect stuff that I can't recall them having before. Pretty sure Revival Mode is also their first "slow" song.

But it's definitely one of those things that can be argued for way too long and doesn't really matter haha. So agree to disagree I guess!
