We had discussed this before in this thread, but I think it's because it is a true closer. they have always had great songs that happened to be last on the records, but Map Change is a real closer.

Amazingly enough, if they never wrote Map Change, Religion of Speed as a closer would have also been amazing, in my opinion.

  2. I think they could've written a better opener than The Great Secret

I'd also argue that Indian Giver was a "real" closer

I felt terrible when I was typing it out because I knew you'd read it, haha

Sometimes things click with me after a while, so we'll see.

My favorite opener is either No Son of Mine or The Great Secret

This album is insane. I didn't think it was possible for a band to be this much in the zone for four straight releases, but I feel like, starting with New Junk Aesthetic, every album has just gotten better and better.

For me it'll be hard to top Idiot as a closer. But map changes is giving it a run for its money.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, except that idiot from Rolling Stone AU!

Even if you dont find the album as a whole as great as FPU or other releases, there is no denying that there are some absolute beasts on this record!

This surprises me, I absolutely love Nothing Visible. I also love Skin Without Bones, because of the imagery and voodoo references. I like when the music I listen to deals with those kinds of thing. Probably why I like "I Didnt Wanna Join Your Stupid Cult Anyway" so much.

  10. I think I would rank this below The Big Dirty, Hot Damn! and New Junk.

    Mine is LT>HD>NJA
Indian Giver definitely has that feel. But I would still argue that due to Low Teens being the most cohesive ETID album, Map Change really feels like its completing the album. That's my reasoning behind saying its their first true closer, and it really has more to do with the nature of the whole album, than to sound of the song itself.

I think Indian Giver and Idiot do a great job of closing their respective albums and I'd definitely consider them both to be true closers. Map Change is a phenomenal closer but I still can't say I prefer it to those two.

I also think this album is heavy as fuck. Maybe not quite as much as FPU but they're close.

I think I'm with you on this. What other songs would fill out your top 5?

Interesting. Sometimes I wonder why bands bother to make music videos anymore. Probably a formality when releasing a new record, but the concept seems so outdated nowadays.

The only good video I've seen this year is that Oathbreaker one for their new album.

I'm not sure what makes Map Change a more "true closer" than, say, Idiot or Indian Giver. All three of those songs are among the best on their respective albums, so it's strange to see people thinking Idiot and Indian Giver don't feel like "true closers."

Religion Of Speed needs more love. That song sounds like Converge tried to write Bohemian Rhapsody. The tempo changes and style shifts are so dope.

It really is astounding how this band keeps finding ways to top themselves and push their sound. 8 albums. 8 incredible, powerful albums.

i watch music videos on youtube all the time, and youtube generates income for labels/whoever runs the channel. its something like 10 grand for every million views. do the math on what that is per view, im lazy.

My reasoning is Map Change is like the end of a story. Ex Lives and FPU dont really have a story being told. So yeah, Indian Giver and Idiot are great ways to end an album, but I feel that Map Change is completing something bigger than that. Just my opinion.

Map Changes feels like it takes the themes of the album, and specifically the complicated birth of Keith's daughter and the peril is wife went through, and puts a period on that sentence so to speak. I adore Idiot and Indian Giver and even Pretty Dirty. They're great closers, but they don't quite touch Map Changes imo as far as ending the album and the running themes.

Yeah, I see your point. I remember watching Fuse or whatever, and tripping out when they played Ebolarama once. Very unexpected haha. But nowadays, its like the thrill of your favorite bands new video appearing on TV is gone. Just a product of the times changing I guess. Same reason I feel the radio is pretty much useless unless my iPod or phone are dead.
