Genuinely looking forward to this new record, the two singles hit me more than anything released before.
Yeah there’s been a lot of discourse and people trying to “cancel” her over the past few days so I figured she would eventually release some sort of statement.
I wasn't even aware of any of this, let alone a campaign being carried out to get her canceled. The only thing that seems to hold any water are the racist remarks she made when she was much younger (even that, I have not seen or read anything about). Good on her for going above and beyond to address all the rest of that stuff even though it seems like it wasn't even needed based on what the accusations are.
Went and looked for some of the stuff that was causing this to come out, the racist shit is really unfortunate and she was definitely old enough to know better but I think that's a good statement regarding it. The other shit she's being accused of is pretty vile from other people to be saying about her.
yeah, i wasn't aware of any of this, and i'm still processing most of it. the racist posts are inexcusable and incredibly disappointing to know about, even if posted a long time ago. folks on Reddit also say that there are allegations against her boyfriend, which isn't good either. the other things levied against her do feel pretty coordinated by bad actors and not rooted in accountability.
Yeah this was all isolated to a very small corner on the internet/twitter. Obviously there is nothing wrong with asking for accountability from her but like she said they were not asking for accountability, it was just straight up transphobia. But yeah glad she addressed everything, but I also think the stuff discussed outside of the racism wasn't anything that should have been taken seriously given her music and the fact that Ethel Cain is a character, albeit inspired by her own experiences, but still a character nonetheless.
I think this all kind of stemmed from the boyfriend stuff because the allegation about him that came out that led to him apparently responding to people and then Hayden deleting all of her personal vlogs/posts on her Ethel Cain accounts.
I also don't think there was much time for her to actually look into it considering how fast it went from that to all of to what happened last night/early this morning.
I guess I should read a little bit more before commenting, but I feel like that is an incredibly in-depth and transparent apology for a list of largely bad faith "allegations" (racist tweets aside). I also feel like while technically of age, 19 is still a largely dumb and young age for kids trying to be edgy and make their friend laugh, especially when they are unfortunate enough to have grown up with full internet access. Pile on the fact that people are asking her to take accountability for the actions of a partner she is still getting to know days after being confronted with new information, and...idk. It's all very depressing. Not my place to "forgive" racism of any kind, but I feel like she really is doing her due diligence here. I challenge anyone who thinks they haven't grown mentally and emotionally between the ages of 18 and your late 20s.
agreed. probably the best sort of statement she could make given the circumstances, even if the reception to it will vary.
Whatever I would have said about this, you summed up my thoughts perfectly. I did extremely dumb and stupid things at 18, 19, etc. in the same vein to be “edgy” and “get a reaction” and have grown tremendously far away from that. Not excusable, but learning & growing is all people can do which Hayden clearly is owning up to.
It really is about as good of an acknowledgment as one can have about these things. I don't read Hayden as asking to be forgiven for what was posted but rather acknowledging that people do change, do grow, and that cancel culture is absolutley toxic and refuses to acknowledge that we are all people who make mistakes of varying degrees.
Yeh that’s a lot…a lot of it is overblown and clearly an attack by terfs…I’ll still be in board with her.
It sure seems to be a bunch of stupid Twitter nonsense not worth the time it’d take to parse any further, imo.
One of the more thoughtful apologies I've read. The racist and xenophobic shit is inexcusable but she says that. I was scratching my head until I dug deeper and saw the person who hacked the Ethel Cain spotify referred to Hayden as a "weird boy." Well hm gosh what could their motivation for attacking this highly successful trans artist be, this is so hard to put together...clearly bad faith imo Also: I wasn't spewing hateful shit online like that when I was 19 but I am 100% confident I was saying some things that were really really fucking stupid nonetheless. Inclined to give some grace there BUT I'm also white and really like her music so like...definitely not the most reliable source about where to draw the line here
