It’s hard for me to rank his stuff. Every rewatch of something shifts everything. There’s been a retrospective at the Philly Film Society of nearly all his work (except Elephant Man ) and it’s such a joy catching them on the big screen. I adore The Return and I believe it’s the best season of television of the last decade, but it’s also very dense. This retro has me reevaluating and appreciating his standalone films.
if i'm including TP as a whole, it obviously tops my list. movies only, FWWM is fantastic, but ranks a bit lower than some of his others for me
Oh interesting haha, i think I’d put it near the top. Just completely melted my heart when we rewatched it last week.
Blue velvet and straight story are for sure 1 and 2, depending on the day either FWWM or mulholland are 3 and 4
i do love it a lot. i just like it more as a larger chunk of the whole show than as a standalone film. it's hard for me to think of it separate from the other 3 seasons. solid, respectable ranking. haven't watched Blue Velvet in a bit but it's obviously fantastic. need to break out my 4K copy soon.
Inland Empire is low end of the spectrum, even as a Lynch fan. But might be easier now having been exposed to more arthouse since then. Have only seen it once but would rewatch. still never seen Wild at Heart but catching it next week
Blue Velvet The Straight Story Fire Walk With Me Mulholland Drive Eraserhead Wild At Heart Lost Highway Elephant Man Inland Empire Dune
Inland Empire is incredibly bizarre and borderline incomprehensible upon initial watches, but it does a great job at evoking such a creepy, liminal atmosphere, and i love revisiting it every time, regardless of how confusing it is. one of my favorite Laura Dern performances too
