Three things that go with me to the grave. 1. Music I made when I was in high school and college. 2. Reviews I wrote before 2011. 3. Intimate romantic details.
Siskel and Ebert absolutely loved “Kingpin.” I’m pretty sure their stamp on it helped make it a marginal hit.
Kingpin has its moments but it doesn't compare to The Big Lebowski. I imagine a lot of the humor hasn't aged well.
I read that PTA thought that he made Magnolia about 20 minutes too long, and honestly kinda agree. Good movie though.
The part with the cop and the abused daughter is the weak link and voiceover/conceit about how it all happened is cringeworthy but it is still a great film. He was only 28 when he made it and it is better than ninety percent of any other directors' entire filmography.
I thought John C Reilly gave one of the best performance of that movie Also I totally understand now why Zach Cregger said his character in Magnolia was a big inspiration for the cop in Weapons.
Every young cinephile tries to challenge the canon. I jumped into a lot of classic arthouse cinema at first so I did not really appreciate the great directors that worked within the mainstream like Mann and Lynch. I also watched Public Enemies first, which I would still largely dismiss, and thought he was massively overrated.
I somewhat envy when someone newer here really starts to go through the major works for the first time. Every movie is a revelation, every new director is a new piece of the puzzle. You will make some ludicrous proclamations because of a lack of context, but it is harmless in the end because it is better to watch stuff and have ahistorical opinions than to never leave your lane.
Australia sounds like such a scary place. The weather and so many living things are trying to kill you.
I know this was in good faith but damn bro this might be one of the most pretentious posts I have read in awhile lol
