You’re doing a bit but you aren’t wrong, most people have now turned to video essays for serious criticism. The guy who does the disturbing movie iceberg videos made Blood Meridian a meme for zoomers
I’m also arguing something else. I don’t care about celebrity interviews, they’ve been softball puff pieces for as long as I’ve been alive
Not sure what the iceberg guy meme is but I watched a Yale literature course on blood Meridian and some other classics 10 years ago on YouTube Premium and it got me back into reading
That’s a good thing! So is the iceberg guy if he got people to read the book. It just isn’t for me (maybe that Yale Course), I prefer to read it
Yes if you specifically want text criticism your in a bad time. I will concede that YouTube criticism suffers from not having a script editor or the institutions to create them
Some people have a dislike toward video essays but they make sense. When talking about a visual art form it helps to actually show the work. Nerdwriter and Broey Deschanel are very good. RedLetterMedia still does interesting work.
The problem with Hot Ones is that wings are best served with either mild buffalo or barbeque sauce and then washed down with a nice soda. No need to suffer through heat.
nobody take that wing bait I was going to mention visual medium but it mostly only helps for technical breakdowns, broey style vids about how a film interacts with culture wouldn’t be any worse as a text piece
generally not a fan of video essays - I feel like they're usually trying to prove something, recontextualizing things to fit the thesis. I feel like good theory/criticism is driven less by interpretation and more by appreciation
