I guess I figured people were more cynical about it here. it's a masterpiece in my mind, for sure. if you're gonna go catch up through the Ghibli films, remember the non-Miyazaki ones the bare essentials -Spirited Away -Princess Mononoke -Totoro -The Grave of the Fireflies less essential, still perfect -Kiki's -Princess Kaguya -Only Yesterday -Nausicaa -The Wind Rises -Boy and the Heron extremely good -Castle in the Sky -Howls Moving Castle -Whisper of the Heart -Ponyo -Arrietty still good but lower tier -Porco Rosso -Pom Poko haven't seen the others yet (Earthsea, Marnie, Ocean Waves, Poppy Hill, The Cat Returns, Yamadas, Lupin, or Red Turtle)
Totoro good Ponyo is ok I should try the original version I just don’t like some of the English dubbing
Haven't watched Kiki's in so long. Loved it as kid. Other than that, I've only watched Spirited Away and Totoro. Need to check out more of the Ghibli films.
maybe look into a British dub if it exists? my dad watched the British dub of Arrietty befor the US dub, and vastly prefers it to the latter (which he calls grating)
I know it's an age-old debate and I get people have their reasons but yeah, would never willingly choose a dub over a sub.

i don't watch a lot of anime/anime-adjacent stuff, but i generally agree with the sentiment. the only exception i made was Star Wars Visions, which i did subbed for season 1, but did dubbed when rewatching (since season 2 was only partially anime, which they returned to fully in season 3).
I kinda think the whole “sub > dub” thing with anime can be kinda silly. Obviously there are dubs that are bad. And obviously the average literate adult should be ok watching a subtitled movie. However, I feel like a lot of modern dubbed stuff isn’t gonna let a viewer down in any notable ways. Certainly times when I’m happy to pick the dub instead.
newer anime will more likely have better dub. at this point the debate merely comes down to personal preference. I watch Frieren and Dungeon Meshi dubbed because they don't take place in Japan (or on Earth, for that matter) and therefore it doesn't break immersion for me. the English VAs for Frieren and Marcille are fantastic but even the dub for stuff that does take place in Japan (Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen) aren't bad at all. and btw i watch with subtitles regardless, unless Crunchyroll doesn't have them match the dub for whatever reason.
Pat almost bullied me into seeing die oydssee at IMAX in Vienna tonight. Very concerned it was going to be dubbed with no subs On der tram to deafheaven instead. Will report back form Budapest, less likely they would have Hungarian dubs
He's hilarious. I'll almost always pick sub for myself but I've seen a lot of the Ghibli dubs with my daughter and I really like them.
I think it depends on the budget. The Ghibli films usually cast dub actors well, with some exceptions of the older ones. The Japanese just helps with my immersion. It feels more cartoony in English and less so/more artful in Japanese. Don’t ask me why. I agree it comes down to preference at this time when anime is huge in the states and studios would be silly not to shell out for a good dub.
I’ve seen this exact question asked before, and someone shared a link to an early 2000s Japanese internet forum where users were getting mad that people were watching South Park dubbed in Japanese instead of in English with subtitles.
