One of my students told me that he puts his long messages from his girlfriend into AI to summarize for him. Reading is becoming kryptonite to people.
I feel it myself. It is so much harder for me to sit and read for an extended, uninterrupted period of time compared to 20 years ago.
Someone I work with (technically my boss at the one job) once said something about ChatGPT when reading poetry, and I was like. Please. Don’t. That’s so anathema to what poetry is, lol. Better to read it on vibes and not “get it” imo, than to let AI spit out some bullshit (that at best will be flattened and poorly cited work someone else did). We did overlap with a couple of books that I read and she listened to this past year, though, which was fun. I liked talking about Wuthering Heights with her. Anyway, this reminds me that I messed up my slow-but-steady (non-comics) reading rhythm for a few different reasons and need to get back on it. Today’s a day off, so as good a day as any.
My honors students are so focused on getting information and summary rather than engaging with actual words on the page. It’s very frustrating
Another fun tidbit about Steven Seagal from Last Action Hereoes, there's an old story that's gone around forever that Seagal always bragged about being the toughest guy on set and how he was a legit badass unlike all the other action stars of the time. One day a crew member got tired of hearing it and tells him no that's the toughest guy on set and points to a shlubby stunt man. So Seagal goes over and starts talking shit and provoking this guy who proceeds to choke him out, Seagal gets up and tries to hit the guy in the nuts, which he does a lot to people on set, so the guy chokes him out again and Seagal passes out and shits himself. Turns out this guy is well-known for a similar incident on set where the story goes he had to toss Bruce Lee around like a ragdoll for getting in his face. This story inspired a scene and character from a little movie called Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Ryan Murphy is a hack but I kinda trust him to handle BEE material. We shall see. The biggest missed opportunity is the BEE/Rob Zombie Manson collab. That would have been wild
