I think so yes. Based on his appearance on Smartless promoting Outcome he said that he was serious for quite a while and now that he has had time away from LA he just wants to get back to writing and doing comedies again. So makes sense that this news dropped less than a month later.
Nickel Boys is pretty universally praised. Drive My Car and One Battle After Another are probably up there too.
That’s fair. You also mentioned drive my car and nickel boys, movies essentially zero people have seen. A little hard to consider movies that under-seen to be unambiguous classics.
Maybe not there yet, but I think The Fabelmans is getting there. Its estimation seems to grow each year.
The movies from the 2000's that dominate polls are In the Mood for Love, Mulholland Dr., Spirited Away, Yi Yi, and There Will Be Blood. Other than There Will be Blood, they are not generally things that people at Chili's have seen. Nickel Boys and Drive My Car were nominated for a lot of awards so they are not as obscure as some other things.
It is an amazing film but I doubt it will ever be held in the same regard as Goodfellas. People complain about the length and the de-aging.
We’ve had this discussion before. My confident answer is Bloody Nose Empty Pockets, but not nearly enough people have seen that. Oppie, One Battle, and Parasite hit the zeitgeist, but I don’t find them to be “classic” films. Aftersun has really stuck with me, but I don’t think it is popular enough. Let me ask my semi-normie group chat. Oppie will probably be the answer.
