Watching Arrival for the first time and it’s comical to imagine that the Chinese would be more trigger-happy towards the aliens than America lol
SNL would probably be consistently really great if they didn’t make the staff create a whole show’s worth of sketches in just a week. And also if they got rid of the live aspect which often ruins comedic beats
Generally speaking, the most iconic Saturday Night Live sketches are rarely that topical. The immediacy of trying to comment on current events is also what hurts a lot of South Park.
At this point a large number of former SNL cast have been open about how (1) the structure of the show is completely chaotic and leads to tons of stress and burnout, and (2) that they themselves are abundantly aware as they’re making it that this structure doesn’t even lead to the best show possible Just think about how many all-time-great comedians have dedicated huge chunks of the prime of their careers to a show where probably like 1/5 of what they end up producing on a given week is even somewhat memorable
i don't necessarily disagree, i was just making a joke. jane is hilarious on tiktok and her musical segments on weekend update are always good but they don't know what to do with her in actual sketches, her style of comedy is simply a poor fit. ppl say oh she's a nepo baby she didn't deserve to be in the cast anyway. idk. the format isn't doing her any favors.
Because Disclosure Day coming out I am now watching for the first time one of my massive film blindspots: Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's weird for UFO movies I have never seen Encounters, but I have seen Fire In The Sky multiple times.
i have problems with some of the acting/writing in Close Encounters (even though it absolutely left a huge mark on the UFO genre), but i'd watch it 1,000x over having to sit through FITS again. a personal letdown for me, save for the last scene (that scene).
it's mainly just some of the character dynamics and dialogue for me ( Teri Garr's performance felt a tad over-the-top at times/the crumbling of her and Richard Dreyfuss's marriage came a bit too fast), but the story is still really strong and the visuals and John Williams's score are top-notch.
My dad never showed me Encounters, but he did make it a point for little kid me to watch FITS and Picnic At Hanging Rock.
I didn’t see it til I was maybe like 23-24, but yeah FITS is a pretty dull movie save for the one scene. That sequence kept me up at night
Encounters is really a testament to Spielberg's "the horizon is more interesting off center" philosophy. So many cool horizon shots.
