Idk I'm pretty sure he said it was his first David Lynch movie and was likely not ready for it at all I get not liking it even if I loved it, really I just need to figure out how much I loved it as I process everything in it but I do know I had a great time
yes, never watched any Lynch before that basically i had always heard "one of the best movies of the century" etc etc and I knew going in that it was a tv pilot reworked into a movie and i think that affected my enjoyment. just feels messy. didn't get it. @OotyPa i think previously mentioned their love for it but i think i don't vibe with like "well it means whatever you think it means" like that lol
FWIW Lynch did say there is a specific plot to it and that even if it is open to interpretation there is an intentional explanation even if he doesn't say what it is I still get that feeling though, I think it's a style I enjoy a lot and I can totally understand why others wouldn't
it gets better with each rewatch and forever a favorite of mine. probably not a good intro to Lynch though. @JoshIsMediocre check out Blue Velvet, Elephant Man, The Straight Story, Twin Peaks (the show)... they're easier to digest
LOVE reading different interpretations online about it. it's an endless well of different perspectives. I would recommend simply just typing in your questions about the film and seeing how people on Reddit answer them according to their own interpretations.
I've been reading a lot since finishing the movie and it's been a great time seeing what everyone takes from it
I understand that reaction to Mulholland Dr., especially as a first Lynch film. I would advise revisiting the film at some point, with separation from expectations. The cinematic craft alone of the Club Silencio scene is enthralling, but on every rewatch, there's more I notice and think about. There aren't many films I can think of that feel like such a layered experience. There's a wealth of great writing that offers worthwhile perspectives and insights as well: https://www.criterion.com/current/p...1DJLOD5iAKF69eDhaL57ET0xxVmN7EZFAC9JtJgkGxnu_
there's so much out there. people write entire books, focus entire podcasts on picking it apart. Lynch may be gone but his films will live forever
this is how i approached Inland Empire. it's a narrative mess in some ways, but the fact that i can pull apart different interpretations of certain elements after each viewing has turned it into one of my favorites of his
Speaking of Lynch I just watched The Last Wave for the first time and if any Lynch fans haven’t seen it I think you’d enjoy it.
Also holy hell Angelo Badalamenti He'll always be my GOAT but throughout Mulholland Drive he and John Neff were absolutely insane, the music and sound in general were overwhelming and phenomenal
I borderline hated Mulholland Drive the first time I saw it. Then I saw it maybe a year later in the theater and absolutely loved it.
I saw that but I havent seen it. Youve been hitting the Australian new wave hard recently have you watched Wake in Fright? its my fav of them
I have not but it’s on my watchlist. I’m currently watching all of Peter Weir’s films that’s why I’m hitting some Australian New Wave.
Ive seen it now, Good rec thanks Grim. I should watch some more Weir too, want to know how he went of Picnic at Hanging Rock and this which feel proto Lynch to DPS and Trueman Show.
