That’s rough, sorry to hear. Corporate work is so dehumanizing. I hate how they view people as resources and how regardless of performance everyone is dispensable.
unfortunately this was the, IIRC, 6th RIF I've been in or impacted by since 2021. Was impacted by one last January at my previous company while my wife was sick. Fully expected to be hit by this one but thankful I'm okay for a bit. It's dire out there and the AIpocalypse isn't helping at all with the doom/gloom hype freight train. Kinda of crazy how we went from this being a relatively rare thing (at least in terms of volume) to an expected yearly/quarterly expectation in regard to layoffs.
The fact that people use AI in conversations is horrifying for me. What are you going to do when you are in person? One of my students said he puts his girlfriends' long texts into AI because he doesn't have time to read all that.
Yeah a kid got broken up with and AI generated his response to try to win the girl back. She called him out on it and he said he was just improving his grammar
kind of insane how we're sandwiched between generations of people who use technology like insane people lol
For their most recent essay I caught a lot of them because the essays were nearly identical since they were all just pasting in the same prompt. I also saw an unusually large number of uses of the word bestow.
I have also been impacted by RIFs at my job, but have been lucky in my current role. My boss somehow manages to protect most of our team, but we exist in a culture of fear 90% of the time while all the execs climb the corporate ladder. It’s fucked.
it's really terrible to fear for your livelihood as much as we have to now. We've had to try really hard to have a fulfilling live outside of work and not overwork ourselves because at the end of the day it really doesn't matter. We are just line items on a P&L statement. Hard work used to protect you but I've seen some people who should've been safe impacted more than I'd like.
Wishing you the best with your new team. I know it's a cliche but it's better to work to live than live to work.
The far-right is bad for a lot of more important reasons but having to pretend you actually enjoy Daily Wire movies or the Kid Rock halftime show seems so self-defeating.
Our longest tenured department member officially retired today (taking a job a nearby vocational junior college in another state to teach carpentry and he's got 29 years in so getting almost full pension), and we had this discussion at his little going away gathering our department did during our planning, and we sorta had this exact discussion when asking him what he'd miss most. Like yeah we all bitch about how hard our job is and how the pay isn't high enough, but at the end of the day....no two days are the same, the kids help keep you young, you're not in some boring office job, you're home earlier than most jobs (downside: Gotta wake up earlier lol), and getting the summers with your family/kids just makes it all worth it. And no matter how shitty and dumb the kids get, there's still those kids, even if it's just one or two a year, you're able to make a real difference with. All my best friends work in office jobs and we all share memes and stuff with each other and they share a LOT of those "life with an office job is awful" type memes (if you know what I"m talking about, like the one with Squidward going through his day with his face looking beaten down and the day is the exact same every day etc) and I always thought it was kind of a trope left over from the 90s/early 2000s 'rebellion' against that life in media, but I guess there is some truth into how soul sucking it is hah. Teaching may be exhausting, and it may really drive me crazy sometimes, but...it sure seems like it could be worse.
It looked alright....a they/them 'did you just misgender me' joke at the start was real dumb, but the rest of it was pretty on par for their dumb jokes--some funny, some not. Hopefully there's some good visual gags like there always are, and Anna Feris usually kills her 'airhead' style line deliveries in these so lol
I do not want to be in a theater with that Scary Movie 6 trailer and have to be aware of people around me finding it funny.
