So then keep it in there lol. I don’t need 10 dudes taking the absolute worst bad faith read of my post because someone in the nfl thread read what i said and posted it in there. Why not just engage directly rather than the weird riling up you guys do before/after you come into another thread? That’s the weird part.
It’s shitty to find out other people are posting rude things about you not thinking you’re going to see it. It doesn’t seem in in jest. Just seems mean. Just calling it like it is.
I'd love to hit you with a counterpoint. I basically didn't read any books outside of 1 or 2 a year for over a decade after I graduated and it was usually stuff that was popular because that's what was pushed onto me. It wasn't until covid and booktube taking off that I got back into it as a main hobby and I've read some incredible stuff because of those communities and those reviewers, started collecting, and reading more books in a year than I read basically from childhood through college. I think throwing blanket statements because of your own personal experience with your students and a poll on Goodreads isn't really a fair view of the actual situation out there, but I understand that it can shape your view. I feel like I encounter way more people who read what would be deemed challenging than not. It's also okay to read what others would deem trash, and if people want to review books for unknown authors and stuff, so be it. I'm just glad people are reading and that this hobby has exploded because there's so much stuff out there to discover and that's fun.
Every part of the site talks shit on another part of the site that they’re less comfortable posting in, it’s just the internet having social factions. It’s toxic and that’s part of why I came to the discussion as an “interesting discussion” and gave input without judgment. but it goes both ways
I am sure the NFL thread users who get sick of my shit sometimes have talked shit about me in their other online circles haha, just happens. Human condition
I love the song “Shit Talker” by Headphones (David Bazan side project) for that reason, just be honest that we all do it in some way or another, “I won’t hold it against you if you don’t hold it against me”
Why do it at all, though? Everyone here seems like reasonable, intelligent, and conscientious people.
I don’t agree. That thread is always used as the landing spot for people who want to talk shit. It’s happened before.
We are starting Macbeth tomorrow and the students are going to hate me for it. The other two senior teachers backed out but I am an eternal optimist.
I mean again I’m not sure if we are talking about the same thing. Sure, reading can be held on a bit of a higher pedestal than watching movies or tv or whatever, but I think once you work out that reading decay and become a fluent reader, simply reading to read is not necessarily a beneficial thing. It’d be like applauding someone just for watching a movie. That’s why, at that point, I think I can call a book trash like I’d call a movie trash (derogatory)
It is more than just anecdotal evidence, though. A majority of Americans read at a 6th grade level or lower.
??? What is up with you guys lol my daughter woke up so I tended to her before I responded to your post. This is what i am talking about my last post before this was the same minute you posted? What are you mad about?
I am only here because I died in Final Fantasy X-2 (a trashy yet enjoyable game) and I had forgotten to save so I don't want to go back to where I was.
I’d like to announce that I am going to sleep now, in case I do not respond to anyone in the correct amount of minutes
Many years ago on a different forum someone got mad at me for not responding quickly and I said I was on vacation (this is before I had a smartphone) and he demanded I take a picture of the city with a current newspaper. Something I will never forget.
I mean that wasn't really talking shit, more a general observation of how this whole 4 hour conversation has gone from what I read. Quite frankly some of this has felt kind of gatekeepy in the sense that it's bad if people read a lot, it's bad if people don't read what you deem not trash, it's bad that a popular book won a popularity contest. I guess I really don't understand what the actual problem is here. I'm sorry your students aren't engaging in the works that you guys are teaching them. To be fair, I was the same way in high school. I didn't find those works to be that exciting to read and attaching work to it felt like a chore. I also had undiagnosed ADHD so maybe that was the issue. It just is. I hope that it improves for yall in that situation because I imagine it's frustrating.
dude come on lmao. it's not that serious, but I tried twice to engage and it was strange that what was being complained about not happening was seemingly being ignored, AT THAT TIME. I appreciate you responding back either way. Sorry for causing harm
Can you really gatekeep books? The vast majority of the canon is free because it is in the public domain.
