What are some of the most tragic missed opportunities in film history?

The death of Philip Seymour Hoffman has robbed us of so much. He was only 46 and he was still getting better and more fascinating. What else would he and Paul Thomas Anderson had done together if not for his demise?

I was watching some clips from Before Midnight and it is very sad that we never got a fourth film. There is always a chance that you ruin the formula but the way that the stories reflected the lives of Delpy, Linklater, and Hawke would have meant we could have watched them age gracefully.

 

Farley.

 

Yeah Farley as the voice of Shrek is one of the biggest "what could have been?" things in film I can think of off the top of my head

 

I mean it was already huge and has like 4 sequels and a few spinoffs

 

I was more thinking if he got a chance to break away from the comedy and try some more serious stuff. Imagine him working with a serious director

 

Rivers Pheonix. Brandon Lee.

 

Phil Hartman and podcaster/writer Harris Wittels. Would love to have seen where their careers would have gone.

 

The thing about Farley is that his out of control lifestyle is so tied to his partying and drug use.

Imagine Coppola's career if One From the Heart didn't bomb. We lost most of the career of a genius.

 

One From the Heart is genius, the public failed him

 

but we did get Jack

 

Megalopolis, a minor masterpiece, would not exist if the public had failed him. We may have gotten a better movie, though

 

I think a different form of Megalopolis would be worth it to get back 40 years of being in limbo. We also probably wouldn't have to have suffered through The Godfather Part III.

 

His kids not having a career would've been such a bummer, and his nephews of course

 

Would their careers really change, though? A stronger American Zoetrope probably helps them overall.

I’d give up every Coppola nepo movie and Wes Anderson if we got to see his Zoetrope vision and live editing through

 

Eh, it’d definitely cool and ambitious but part of the reason I love the film so much is because it is so completely about his failures

 

I would have liked to see the later careers of Anton Yelchin, Chris Penn, James Gandolfini

 

Really miss Anton Yelchin. He was special
