I finished watching all the Best Documentary Feature Oscar frontrunners this weekend. Here is my ranking 1. The Perfect Neighbor - Innovative true crime doc about a neighborhood dispute in central Florida that gradually escalated into a tragedy. Made almost entirely of edited together police bodycam footage. On Netflix 2. The Alabama Solution - from the documentarian behind HBO's The Jinx. About systemic abuse and corruption within the Alabama state prison system, the work of Alabama's prisoner rights movement, and the 2022 Alabama incarcerated worker's strike. Notable for using footage obtained from contraband cell phones that the filmmakers helped smuggle into prison. On HBO Max. 3. Apocalypse in the Tropics - Brazilian documentary. About the rise of American style evangelical christian nationalism in Brazil that led to the election of Jair Balsonaro in 2018, and the chaotic aftermath of his 2022 loss in the general election. On Netflix. 4. 2000 Meters to Andriivka - From the same Ukrainian filmmaker behind 2024 Best Doc winner 20 Days In Mariupol. Documents an engagement a part of the wider failed 2023 Summer offensive by Ukraine. Entirely frontline combat footage. Available for free on the PBS Youtube channel. 5. Cover-Up - From veteran documentarian Laura Poitras (2015 Best Doc winner Citizenfour). Follows the life and 60+ year career of legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh. On Netflix.
I know ai slop is inherently bad and destroying our planet but I can't stop watching the ones of cats doing construction work (poorly) and then getting in fights with each other
Speaking of Eephus, just started Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point by some of the same crew. Loving it so far
The only thing I know about Euphus (besides that it's a baseball movie) is that it was produced and partly funded by the Chapo Trap House crew.
I've seen Eephus and Miller's Point, both movies I had a pretty tough time getting through tbh. Would describe them as good movies that are just simply not for me
oh hell yeah. watched the whole show earlier this year. last few seasons suffer in quality and the last season especially is a mess because the network was just dumping the episodes and airing out of order but the first like 6 seasons are really great stuff
I like how the host is like "you guys really broke new ground for television. Live episodes, musical episodes, ect" Drew Carey is like "Really? Nah I don't think we did" lol
