Stand by Me is the quintessential coming-of-age story for that age group who saw it at the right time. A Few Good Men for courtroom procedurals, Misery for horror, When Harry Met Sally for romantic comedies, The Princess Bride for adventure. Other than Spielberg very few directors can claim that many films that remain part of the cultural conversation decades later.
Today is just a goof off day. When I showed Marie Antoinette for the French Revolution and they didn't pay attention I got so mad. They don't deserve real cinema.
Feel like you can't even show movies in class anymore because half the kids don't even watch, they just get on their phones. So annoying.
I did my annual Die Hard rewatch last night I think someone somewhere could write a thesis on how the introduction of "the relatable everyman as an action hero" trope did infinite negative damage to the psyches of generations of American men. "What if some average schlub stopped a terrorist attack?" was great for the genre, but bad for society on the longterm. I think you could really make a long loose connection between Die Hard and the delusional "good guy with a gun" argument against gun control.
That used to be an epidemic until this year when they made a bunch of new rules and laws. Now they have another reason to go to the bathroom besides vaping.
