I don't think I'd trade either kid for a movie made since they were born. Now a 1980s shot on video slasher? I'd have more to think about.

I wouldn’t want the kind of life where I couldn’t see Madame Web in theaters three times.

I stopped going to theaters before kids even, but for similar reasons. If I happen to have 2-3 hours of free time, I simply want to use it on something else instead of sitting in a theater with a movie

  4. Spo’s case is further down the spectrum than I would’ve guessed, but not so far off from the norm that I find it baffling. It’s easy to insulate yourself by hanging out on a forum where people are preordering tickets and dissecting their theater piss habits every other week, but I honestly feel lucky if I run into someone in the wild who even knows what One Battle After Another is without having to be like “the one with the meme of Leo at a payphone”. I bet the average American visits a theater like 3 times a year tops

I mean having young kids is the main factor I see. The majority of my friends like movies. The aren't tuned in to the new Jafar Panahi or know what Hamnet is, but they like to watch and talk about movies. The ones without kids go to the movies often, the ones with kids don't. When my kids get older and can fend for themselves for the afternoon/night, or if they start going on playdates and stuff, I'll get out to the movies more. Chalking up a Friday/Saturday night to a movie vs. going out to a nice dinner with friends or a concert or something...I'm picking the latter every time.

Again, I'm still seeing movies. I have the Criterion Channel. I definitely have an addiction to buying boutique horror and trash BDs. I honestly just don't think many modern movies are worth me figuring out a way to go and see them. I understand the irony of saying that and then The Whale being one of the 7 films I've seen in 5 years. I had high hopes for it!

Excluding the school trips you are averaging less than two theater trips a year and one of them was for The Whale?

  10. idk what's going on in here but going to the movies rules and if anything having two kids has only made me choose to go more when i do have the moments of free time to go

kids did reduce it from about three times a week to once every week or two though

I love going to the movies. I think there’s legit reasons stated in here for not going, especially if you have kids, are immunocompromised or just fear the public. But no one can convince it’s not the optimal way to consume movies.

And I truly hate the people that says “But I have my own snacks/bathroom/can pause the movie at home,” etc. Like, how many bathroom and snack breaks are you taking? Or the people that say home viewing is comparable to a movie theater. It’s simply not.

I cannot imagine having enough "free time" to go to the movies once a week with one kid, let alone two.

  13. took my oldest to see zootopia over the weekend and it was the first of probably the 7 or 8 movies she's been to where it was more than just a handful of other people and she had a blaaaaaast

I'll be devil's advocate and say that while I agree that the movie theater experience is the best way to watch a movie, I do think you're overrating the act of going to the movies vs. watching classics at home. I rewatched Paris Texas for the first time in years last month. Would it have been better to see in a theater? Obviously. Would spending a night seeing Roofman (sorry Roofman) in a theater have been better than my night watching Paris Texas? No. That's putting aside the logistics I would need to get a sitter or get out after my kids go to bed to see a mediocre movie. There's a finite amount of good things playing in theaters. I will never be able to get through my ever growing watchlist from previous years. I will die with it unfinished.

I'll substitute my Roofman slander for Hit Man, a mediocre movie that I saw.

Hit Man, a movie I quite enjoyed, would have been so much better with a crowd reacting to it in a theater instead of on my tv at home
