There’s a difference between suspension of disbelief and a being taken out of a story by a a bad visual effect or any other deliberate choice a director makes.

You can go into the Irishman knowing about the de-aging, but that doesn’t mean it’s beyond criticism when it doesn’t work.

Verisimilitude is important for stories and takes work to create and maintain. Doesnt have to be effects but if your taken out of a story unintentionaly by something it did Its fair to critic it.

For the Irishman I liked the moive and that goes a long way into helping buy the anti-aging effects. During talking scenes it looks fine, the lack of youthful psychality in thier gestures although intially distracting brings a sadness that plays into the themes of the movie. The action scenes dont work at all and veer into absurd.

Suspension of disbelief is a two-way street. It’s not the audience’s job to simply accept the director’s portrayal of something if they do a bad job of filming it.

I adore the Irishman and think it’s one of Scorsese’s best films, but the spell gets broken in a couple places, most notably the scene where DeNiro beats the shopkeeper. There were better ways to do that.

I’ve actually never seen it. Maybe I’ll watch it tonight. What did you watch it on?

I don't disagree, but then the next scene I'm back in it. Like just because a moment doesn't work for you doesn't mean it should define the film I guess.

There is no easy solution. Different actors across time periods never feels like the same character. Makeup is often unconvincing. Unless you are taking the Boyhood approach, there is going to be some awkwardness. It is very brief and in a few scenes. If that is the biggest problem with the film, it must be pretty spectacular otherwise.

Fair enough, but to be clear, I don’t think it defines the film at all

The greatness of the film plays a part in that criticism, it overall raises the standards and expectations. The closer to perfection the uglier individual blemishes appear.

I would absolutely prioritize seeing Goodfellas, Wolf of Wall Street, Taxi Driver, and The Departed. From there, just keep going.
