Ahh yes another week and another post about someone being snobby about comic book movies because they think they’re above them. Just let people live and enjoy what they want.

Edit: just so no one comes at me. Scorsese is obviously above them and is an exception. Jodie Foster, who has good TV work, has yet to direct a good movie. John Woo isn’t exactly Scorsese either. These people need to just chill out. But these sites also need to stop bringing it up to every single person trying to get a rise out of people.

 

It's amazing to say that toward a filmmaker. Every filmmaker over the last fifteen years can tell you how their projects were derailed or altered because of the oversaturation of those movies.

 

Let people live and dislike what they want.

 

Just want to say that “Godzilla Minus One” absolutely whips ass and if you don’t see it in theater, you’ve brought shame to your ancestors.

 

Difference is that I’m not trying to put down a whole genre like it’s some lower form of entertainment. Like what you want, dislike what you want. You don’t have to be a snob and act like it’s beneath you though

 

Isn't it just common sense at this point that Disney live-action remakes, Star Wars adjacent things, and especially superhero movies are oversaturating the industry?

 

I don’t disagree with that. But she’s saying the movies don’t change her life implying they aren’t worth as much. She doesn’t say anything about what the movies have done to the industry. The movies she directed aren’t life changing or even good. No one’s out there putting her down for it.

 

Superhero films are a lower form of entrainment. It's crazy to act like there aren't distinctions.

Exactly. So why does she get to put down a whole genre? She includes The Matrix for Christ sake and it’s not even a part of it. There’s a ton of shitty comic book movies and there’s great ones. Personally don’t think there’s a single even decent Jodie Foster directed movie. So why are her movies a higher form of entertainment?

It doesn't help that the publications continually use these quotes for clickbait headlines, but people really seem to be misunderstanding what Foster, Scorsese, and so many others are saying. It's not that they are simply "looking down" on these movies as low art. It's that they are being made from a watered down studio mandated vision and even worse they crowding out diverse stories. No one serious is going to look down on someone for enjoying superhero movies, star wars, etc. But it would be nice if they weren't this monolith that is actively crowding out other types of films.

 

Which Scorsese actually makes clear. Foster does not say anything remotely close to that, so it’s not really a misunderstanding. Talking shit on how the genre is mostly handled and what it’s done to the industry is completely reasonable. Half of these people aren’t actually bringing that up though, they’re just putting it down like it’s beneath them

 

I'm asking this sincerely - are you in any way involved in the production of superhero movies?

If not, I find it weird to get this upset about a 60 year old woman's comments on them. She's not the target audience, of course she feels differently than most.

and if you feel that you personally are being persecuted for being a big fan of them, I think that merits some self-examination about your relationship to those movies

 

I am not and I don’t feel persecuted at all. I’m not even upset, so my bad if it’s coming off that way. I just think these articles are tiring and annoying just for clicks. And it’s almost always from someone that doesn’t really have the room to look down on other stuff.
