My freshmen are reading it so I am using early release Fridays to show them the movie in chunks. I am just glad I have two different courses this year so I don't have to watch it six times.

Movies I can almost quote by line because of teaching:

    Saving Private Ryan
Avatar (we used it for the colonialism of Africa)
Marie Antoinette (the kids hate this movie so much)
    Grapes of Wrath
    Paths of Glory
    The Great Gatsby
    The Hunger Games
    Beowulf
    Frankenstein
    Night and Fog
    Hotel Rwanda
    Life of Pi
    Selma
    Hamilton
    The Sword in the Stone

When I don't feel like teaching, Mean Girls and Major Payne are on rotation. The Mario movie made its way in at the end of last year.

  4. thinking about when i watched the Graduate for my high school film elective taught by a stoned and disinterested english teacher and how none of the kids were paying enough attention to realize that they probably would've found the premise pretty funny.

Also thinking about when we watched the Godfather for that class and it probably took at least 6 class periods. What a terrible way to watch that movie

We watched Star Trek a lot in history and Simpsons in English but my absolute favorite was Men of Honor because you will not believe what class that was for

I used an episode of The Office and The Simpsons to teach about rising and falling action. The kids actually liked The Simpsons more.

We watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? in English class after we read the Odyssey. I also remember watching the Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet in 8th grade after we read it.

The scene in the hotel room with Myrtle is one of the worst things I have ever seen.

They usually don't like 90's comedies but they love Payne. I do have to promise them it gets funnier after the setup in the first part.

  20. If all high schoolers were required to watch TNG S5E2 Darmok the world would be a better place

I show my students The Social Network paired with Gatsby as juniors, and they still bring it up when they see me as seniors asking if they can watch it again.

More of mixed bag with my AP girls using Frasier as an example of farce though.

My high school history teacher was also the film appreciation teacher, so between the two classes I remember him showing us National Treasure in history the same week that he was showing us a “legitimate” work of American cinema. What’s funny is that this teacher running the film class admitted that National Treasure is his favorite movie.

I’m watching Sorcerer on my couch for the first time and got to the climactic bridge scene and a fucking spider cricket jumped onto my neck and then crawled in between my glasses and my eye. I don’t know what I did to deserve this
