I know Rotten Tomatoes is this big thing but who actually uses it? I only hear people talking about it when they're making fun of it.

 

I will check it and look at top reviewers and see if any of them I generally resonate with.

Yeah I've put CERTIFIED FRESH stickers on many physical releases I've worked on. People love that site

 

I regularly hear the RT score brought up when people are talking about what movies to see. It is unfortunately very much the go to for most people when trying to figure out what’s good or not.

 

I get it movies cost money and time and people want the best approximation of guarantee even if it's flawed

 

I get why people rely on an aggregator. Metacritic feels like the lesser of two evils since it isn’t a simple thumbs up or thumbs down scale.

 

I think the misunderstanding of the number is the bigger issue because I feel most people see it as a grade and not “% of critics that have positive thoughts” (pretty sure that’s what it actually is)

I think numbers on the extremes are helpful sometimes, like I’m not gonna go out of my way to see Five Nights At Freddy’s due to that low number, but I remember watching Leave No Trace because it had overwhelmingly positive reviews (and that was before I was more plugged in to film twitter or whatever)

 

I remember way back in the day people would say "how many stars did it get" like it was some sort of objective rating.

 

My friend with three kids is so miserable that he has to go see Five Nights at Freddy's. They should have some sort of daycare system at those types of movies so adults can see something else or go to a lounge or something.

 

You want the 17 year old ticket taker to also babysit?

 

I check it to get an idea about a film or something, then maybe go google search some reviewers at actual reputable sites.

But mostly I check RT from time to time just to see what new is coming out that week, it's useful at least for that.
