Affleck is right. It’s like if every grocery store only sold candy.

It’s actually more like if the people who only shopped at major grocery store chains were buying the same brand of frozen dinners and almost nothing else, and every year less and less people were buying things other than the frozen dinners, so the major grocery store chains slowly stopped stocking things other than frozen dinners (because everything else was going unsold) and eventually the only place to get organic produce was directly from a farmer’s market.

If you took a span of any significant time, like 1-6 months, and removed everything from all theater chains with a budget above $100 million, all that would happen is theater sales would plummet. There wouldn’t be some kind of mass awakening where people suddenly changed their preferences overnight. The majority of people in 2022 don’t want to go to the theater to see things that aren’t big budget spectacles. It’s sad but that’s where we’ve gotten as a society at this point; it was trending that way pre-2019 and the pandemic has only hastened the trend. You can try to blame any number of factors but the truth is that general audiences want to go to the theater to see F9 and Bond and Spider-Man. They don’t want to go see independent and foreign films that way. I wish it was different too but it’s just not.

This assumes that if you give people the choice between a pear and an apple, that a significant portion of people would choose the apple over waiting for a pear. In reality, giving half of the pears’ shelf space to apples would only mean that less people are able to buy pears who want them. Some of the people who don’t get a pear might choose an apple instead, but most of them will just wait until more pears get stocked because that’s what they really want.

Covid has accelerated what was already happening, but take it out of the equation and plenty of mid-budget and independent films have done perfectly well. But now the goal for movies in theaters is a billion dollars, and to that end everyone thinks you need IP of the moment to get there. It has diverted resources and space for anything that isn’t Marvel or a reboot or a sequel or kids movies. Nitpick analogies all you like but it’s happening.

Theaters are lucky anyone is still going to see movies right now given what’s going on. For better or worse, people are willing to risk Covid for Spider-Man. They aren’t for anything else.

My local multiplex has three showings of West Side Story and three showings of Licorice Pizza running every day. The seats are totally empty through the rest of this week right now. It is what it is.
