I think part of the challenge with the premise is the MCU is mostly populated with middle-age actors who already have careers. Kristen Stewart was 18 when she did Twilight. Outside of Tom Holland, there aren't that many actors who got their start in the MCU and are faced with the decision of how to manage their careers.

Most of the MCU consists of either 1) actors like Cumberbatch, Bettany, and Cooper who can do whatever they want, and 2) actors like Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, and Clark Gregg who are probably smart enough to realize that sticking around is a good financial decision.

The problem with the comparison is that the Marvel actors are generally older than some of the other franchises I was thinking of, like Harry Potter or Twilight or Star Wars. However, it is noticeable that everyone went with actors rather than directors.

It’s not a question of whether they would have had the opportunities to do interesting work anyway, it’s a question of are they actually doing the interesting work. Just because they have opportunities doesn’t mean they’ll take them. They could all just coast on Marvel movie checks forever and not do any more interesting work, but a lot of them aren’t doing that.

I also think of shows with very young casts, like Friday Night Lights or The Wire. Riggins tried to be a movie star and failed with John Carter, but now Landry consistently shows up in acclaimed films.

Also it’s not Marvel but Rian Johnson is a good example of someone who went through the modern Disney machine and came out doing interesting work

It isn't Marvel or Disney's fault, but it is funny that Robert Downey Jr. was in his best film a year before Iron Man came out and has done absolutely nothing with his superstardom since then.

I personally think Tom Holland was correct and brave to say what he did. Remember when that villain Scorsese said this:

  15. I wonder how much mileage Chris Pratt has left. He won't ever be held responsible for being a bad person and every movie he has done not in the MCU after guardians 1 has been terrible. After he's done being star lord how long can he milk that?

i have not seen a Hemsworth, Pratt, Holland, RDJ, Larson, Saldana, Renner, Rudd or MBJ project that has been of note much at all since taking fairly large roles in the universe. rudd feels a bit unfair bc i just haven’t gotten to shrink next door yet, though i haven’t heard great things about it, so it might fit into this category fairly, regardless

there are examples of people who have done interesting projects, certainly, but they’re more of exceptions to the rule than anything else and mostly come from people (Ruffalo, Evans, Cumberbatch, etc.) who have been mentioned previously as large stars before becoming attached, so this hit of being identified solely for the MCU role is less likely to occur

Rumor is that he’s stocking up on voice roles because he won’t get vaccinated and studios can’t/won’t take the risk so I’m interested to see how it plays out as well

This conversation bums me out because the actor who seemed like he was gonna have the most interesting balance of Marvel flagship character and great non-franchise acting is probably Chadwick Boseman. Still so sad about that loss.

he's shooting Guardians so unlikely because Disney is very big about vaxx status, not defending him just not really a fan of trying to figure out who's vaxxed
