I am (hopefully) instilling in my students the idea that just because you disagree with the actions of a character in a work of fiction, that doesn't mean the work of fiction is "bad" or attempting to tell the reader to do what the character is doing. This is something that should have been taught in like...2nd grade but so it goes.

She obviously didn't actually watch the Irishman because I can't imagine anyone watching that movie and thinking that DeNiro sitting alone, estranged from his family and picking out a coffin, is a glorification of the Mafia.

 

There's been some weird disconnect where saying "this is a great character" translates to "this is a great person and I endorse everything about them." It's going around in a ton of fandoms right now with this idea of "this character should be protected at all costs and I love them!!!!!11!!!!" and it's really "well, this is a great, complex villain that is very entertaining to watch and gives me a lot to think about and no I do not feel bad that they are being taken to task for murdering 50 people event though they're very attractive"
