Are.... are you saying there hasn’t been a good sci-fi film since Moon??

 

It depends how you define it. I looked up a list to double check, and they included stuff like Mad Max: Fury Road and Upstream Color. Those are both great films.

 

I don’t even know where to begin with that. Lol.

I mean, those are both great movies. But there have also been amazing sci-fi films since Moon. Fuck it. I don't even like Moon that much.

Blade Runner 2049? Arrival? Annihilation?

 

Under the Skin

 

That is a pretty good pick. Reverse Shot made me question my initial appreciation for it, but I have not watched it since it came out.

 

All the movies that come to mind for me are sci fi but all really different kinds of movies. Attack the Block, Under the Skin, Her, District 9, Ex Machina

Also they’re not like “great” films or whatever but the Planet of the Apes reboots are really good action movies. Would choose those over Star Wars any day

 

The trailer for Prometheus would be a strong contender for a great science-fiction film as well.

 

Yeah, that was what I was getting at. I’m kind of flabbergasted by the idea that Moon was the last great film in the genre.

 

High Life is sci-fi, right?

The high budgets of science-fiction naturally strips a lot of the creativity and risk-taking from the genre, and the great directors are very rarely allowed to work with films with those kinds of budgets. Alfonso Cuaron did something interesting with Gravity, but other than that it is hard to find a lot of great filmmakers given an opportunity other than someone like Spielberg.

Have you seen any of the movies already mentioned? There have been some truly amazing ones since 2009, like too many to mention really.

I'm no longer surprised by anything he says haha. He's seen a buttload of stuff, though, so he's a pretty reliable source for good and obscure recs. Just don't ask him how he feels about superhero movies.

I definitely need to commit this to memory for the future because I’m still reeling from it. Maybe next time I won’t be caught so off guard.
