I know. Why did they call it an indie film? The marketing is trying to position this as indie/“A24” adjacent and words and their meanings will continue to deteriorate because nothing matters anymore

 

Because the kind of people that run those accounts and pay for a check mark are dumb as hell. lol

 

And I'd say the marketing has been more "look at the talent behind this movie and they're from all these beloved A24 movies", which is fair to use to rope people in. People skewing that into thinking that makes it an indie movie are just stupid. But that is what's become of us, so the sentiment about it ruining the word are still true.

 

Movie looks run of the mill but honestly “cinematographer from Green Knight” might get my butt in a seat.

 

Listening to the Unspooled pod defend to the death the Robbie Williams monkey movie as great cinema and how unfair it is that so many people wrote it off.

 

I get why people are defending it but the monkey man movie was not at all for me.

 

If your premise turns people off, you should not be mad at the people. They had to have known this was a weird decision that would make people go, “what the fuck” more than “that looks cool.” I haven’t seen it. I can’t judge the movie. It looked dumb, not intriguing. I’ll probably eventually see it on streaming at some point. GOTG made me care about a tree that says 3 words. I’m sure the movie can make me enjoy and care about the monkey. But not something I’d go see in a theater.

 

the only thing that bugged me was how Americancentric people were about it and well everything, England exists and they have movie theaters and electricity and everything lol

 

They clearly haven’t seen the touching indie drama “Avengers: Endgame.”

 

I’m about to see it. In 17 minutes, plus commercials/trailers, so like 30 minutes.

Yeah Paul Scheer's take on it was " I keep hearing people say 'I don't want to see it because I don't know anything about Robbie Williams' well that is the point of a biopic. LEARN."

He and his co-host actually said it was better music biopic than A Complete Unknown

 

That is not the point of biopics, they have rightfully earned their reputation as fan service slop.

 

It's cool if the monkey movie isn't that but you can't blame the audience for not seeing it.

 

The point of a biopic is to make a lot of money by having a built in audience that is curious about the movie based solely on their appreciation for the person. It isn't about learning about the person.

 

I watched Better Man in the cinema last year on Boxing Day and it's really good but a couple of weeks ago I watched it again at home and its absolutely brilliant on second viewing!! The irony is that I knew Robbie Williams's music because he massive over here and knew the hits on the radio but never did a deep dive into the back catalogue and since the 2nd viewing I started listening to his albums and fuck me that guy has bangers for days!!

 

it isn't in any way better than a complete unknown lol but it is an inventive way to go about making a biopic so I kinda respect it more
