When great directors reach the age of 75 they should get unlimited money to make whatever they want.

 

Had to double check David Lynch’s age before I commented. But I agree.

It wouldn't be my list, but it would be a good place to start.

 

Saw this and wanted to share with you all, all of Hong Sang Soo’s films up to his work in 2023;

He’s a very prolific Korean filmmaker (he usually releases at least one film a year since the late 90s). He has a very distinctive style with how they’re filmed too, lots of long takes, pans and zooms as he films conversations over dinner or drinks.

A huge amount of his films feel semi autobiographical, tales of pathetic men, very often filmmakers or working in the industry, embarrassing themselves around younger women, often actresses. He often plays around with time or realities, showing the same sort of thing multiple times.

A lot of his films feel like retreads of each other, but it’s one of those things that the more you watch, the more they all make sense as a collective. It’s not a diverse set of films (though they’re not ALL the same), and if you watch a few and hate it, you’re probably not missing anything. I really love his films though, I’ve seen all of them that are currently available (I think…)

If you’re looking to try a couple, I particularly like Right Now Wrong Then, On The Beach at Night Alone, Yourself and Yours and In Front of Your Face. You really can’t go wrong with any of them though.
