He’s not necessarily wrong that digital archives are a stronger long term, macro scale thing to have.

But also, on an individual level, DVDs are cool. B-) Shout out to places with used movies, like Half Price Books and The Exchange, and thrift stores, etc.

I’m building a digital archive of queer media. So much of it was already hard to find but now with entire series being erased I want to help preserve as much as I can

I like both but if I actually owned a computer I would probably also hoard digital media

Physical media is inferior for obvious reasons. The problems with digital media are real, but the solution to that is to try and create a better landscape for digital media, not to rely on outdated technology, especially as newer films will not be released physically at all and DVD player hardware is discontinued as well.

It is not as if physical media was immune to the problems of availability. Many films were never upgraded from DVD to Blu-Ray, and there are even those that never went from VHS to DVD.

This is all true, but also. Some people just wanna pull a cheap ass case with a DVD in it off their shelf, throw it in a device that can play it, and watch a movie.

I just wish physical media players were more widely available, Steve Jobs is burning in hell for getting rid of the cd/DVD drive and headphone jack, that may have been Tim Cook

No one is stopping them. They still sell VHS tapes at the local flea market.

Neither is better at this point in time because they both have pros and cons. It's down to preference right now.

Yes, they are outdated. The problems listed in the article are mostly around in physical form, as well. The vast majority of silent films are not lost because someone had them improperly stored on a hard drive.

Aren't hard drives a form of digital storage? I could probably google this but last time I heard the arguments about digital storage bad we didn't know how long hard drives lasted because modern hard drives haven't been around long enough to test

In honor of Earth Day, I'm watching Planet Earth 3 all day. Just as much as the first two series, the first episode already had some jawdropping shots.

One of the most positive developments, even though it is very expensive, is the transmission to solid state hard drives, even though they are much more expensive than the traditional ones.

Luckily they've been getting exponentially cheaper in recent years

I have five external hard drives totaling 38 gigabytes and the fear of them breaking down is definitely real, especially the portable ones without a dedicated power source. However, there are things we can do in terms of backup and cloud storage. Ultimately it is better for a file to be out there somewhere than hoping someone kept a DVD of Shark Week.

I watch DVDs pretty often but they look bad.

Someone told me yesterday some newer blu ray players upscale DVDs, I dunno how good that could look though

Upscaling DVD quality to BD really isn't worth it, you're just creating fake quality where it doesn't exist

DVD's and even Blu-Rays are compressed. A few years ago a local theater decided to show The Godfather Part II and they used a Blu-Ray or maybe even a DVD, and blown up onto a big screen it looked pretty bad. The files sent to theaters are a lot bigger than what a Blu-Ray disc can hold.
