I tried to get a new soundbar when the tv idea was shot down but no luck there either. I’m using a cheap Vizio one that’s like, 9 years old

 

this one is cheap but good enough, I went a year without one which turned me on to team subtitles.

 

I assume the tech companies with the glasses are working on having live AI subtitles for real life

As the parent of a child with hearing loss, it would absolutely rule if every movie had subtitles to help my son out, rather than having to seek out special screenings. The special showings should be for the losers bothered by the subs.

 

I just want a ATDI/Mars Volta biopic. With subtitles of course

 

This was absolutely not an accessibility issue, those things should be readily available for en masse for all that need them.

Just like it's hard for people it to understand what's going on without them, it's hard for others to follow what's going on when they're there.

 

How do you watch foreign films if subtitles bother you?

I’m an adult and can make exceptions when necessary. I’m literally just saying that I don’t think they should be on *every* showing for *every* person

 

It’s not “hard” to understand, lol. It’s impossible to understand if a person has hearing loss.

I prefer subtitles at home and none at the theater. I actually worked at a theater that had these glasses that would display subtitles for people, thought that was cool

 

Do you see how this doesn’t equate? A person with hearing loss can’t pick and choose when their disability impacts them and when it doesn’t.

 

Yeah I don’t get how subtitles are a distraction from the movie when you don’t need them, but they aren’t a distraction when you actually need them for a foreign language. That doesn’t make sense.

 

It’s just something that I don’t want all the time. Do I want a Mountain Dew all the time? Nah, sometimes I want a Pepsi

I'm not talking about people living with disabilities and would never. Of course there are situations in which subtitles are more than appropriate.

 

I wasn’t disagreeing with you though. Daniel said it doesn’t apply to foreign languages so that’s what I’m saying doesn’t make sense.

 

They are a distraction, I'd rather be able to focus on the entire frame of the film, but it's necessary if I want to enjoy a foreign film. I also find it easier to follow embedded subtitles in films than the running black bars on TV.

 

People are trying to understand what people are saying. No one is attacking your preference. But people are trying to understand why. And some illogical things have been said, not just you. So, there are questions.

I haven’t see those black bars in probably like 15 plus years. They are bad, you’d think they’d figure out a better way by now

 

To be clear my original dumb post was specifically about people who are perfectly capable of hearing that have them on on their TV at all times.
