12 Angry Men is really high on their current list, and I see it a lot in TikTok lists. It is usually the only old (pre-New Hollywood) film on their lists. I assume that a lot of them watched it in a class.

The IMDb boards for TV shows was fascinating. So many people coming up with the dumbest theories about what was going to happen for a variety of shows. A lot of them ended up calling the dumb twist at the end of Boardwalk Empire that I was sure was too dumb to happen.

IMDb's Top 250 used to be a good mixture of art and populism with a few headscratchers. Unfortunately they've been infiltrated pretty hard by incels and comic book psychos in recent years so, like, Joker is on their top 250 and anything with a black person has its score slightly deflated.

Which is a shame because the foreign entries on their 250 used to be a great gateway you could point to. Kurosawa, Wages of Fear, Miyazaki, Das Boot, City of God, Pan's Labyrinth, etc.

They still have an occasional pleasant surprise in there though. Like Stars on Earth, Klaus, Capernaum, In the Name of the Father, 3 Idiots, and The Lives of Others are all fixtures on there and not praised the same way in other places. So they do still have some identifiable personality there.

I want to do a Verhoeven filmography run now with all this talk on Twitter. I’ve actually not seen his films in years and kinda wrote him off. Though all the interesting threads about Starship Troopers and the love for him here has got me excited to get into his films again.

He's made so many great, interesting films and doesn't really repeat himself.

The other day there was a guy making the rounds on Twitter saying that Starship Troopers failed as a satire because their society looked awesome, thus inadvertently revealing himself to be a fascist or at least sympathetic to it.

When I was 7 or 8 I really wanted to see ST but obviously my Dad saw it first and said hello no. Though I had him get me a thick picture book with concept art and designs with the set in it. I read that book a lot as a child. Some of the concept art was really cool

A not insignificant amount of the IMDb Sopranos board was convinced that that character killed at the end of season five was still alive because you didn't actually see them get shot.

There were Starship Troopers when I was a kid. They had no idea how to market that movie.

I saw it at my cousin's house because his father was a raging alcoholic who would just rent four or five movies from Blockbuster at a time without really paying attention to what any of it was.

For the movie’s 20th anniversary, I wrote an editorial at my former paper about how Starship Troopers was the first R-rated movie my parents let me see at the theater. There were a lot of Heinlein fanatics that got in my mentions about how Verhoeven ruined the book.

I’m pretty sure I could quote Goodfellas before I even saw it.

My kids enjoyed their first watch of Men in Black the other night. It really holds up! Vincent D'Onofrio is so fucking funny in it

Bob Marley movie made $45 million over the long weekend. The non-stop trailers worked!

I somehow never saw that trailer. Explains why I saw Madame Web instead of it.
