The transitions from 20-30 episode seasons to 10 or so has been a good development. Though there was this annoying trend for a while of making the final season notably shorter than the prior seasons and it makes no sense to me at all. It almost always feels rushed, eg GOT, VEEP

This is why you watch a show once it is over.

The one good things about network shows is they were on some kind of timetable, so there wasn’t a lot of waiting. It’s why I gave up on “Venture Brothers.” Loved it, but the waits were brutal and unwieldy.

You miss all of social benefits. Watching the same show as someone was such an easy path to friendship, a fresh conversation topic every episode.

Binging a show all at once also pretty much guarantees you aren’t going to absorb it as well as someone actively following it

In theory you have time the absorb and discuss the episodes each week with your friends/argue on forums/indulge the memes vs cramming it all the night before a test

You aren't literally watching it all at once. I usually watch one or two episodes a day, maybe three on a day off. It is much easier to keep up with the intricacies of the plot and the characters instead of investing seven or eight years.

Some shows are good to binge, some are bad to binge.

  17. the only ones i can get behind binging are mini-series. like 5 or less episodes.

I prefer not binging but I like it maybe 15% of the time.

  19. My wife can sit and binge a show all day. I always make her mad because sometimes I'll sit and watch like 8 of 10 episodes with her and then I'll be like "Ok I'm going to go do something else now." Haha I can easily step away from watching something halfway in, or even close to the end.

Shockingly, humans and how their brains work can be very different from each other. As well, how a show is presented will have many factors that impact how much one will remember or not.

Plus, binging a show isn’t the same as cramming for a test.

This is really it, in general. As far as “absorbing” the show, I think it also depends on the person. I generally have a great memory. For me, it has less to do with how quick I watch a show and more to do with how focused I was. Am I locked in for each episode or am I allowing myself to check my phone or do an activity while I watch.

Absorbing a show isnt just about being focused, there’s a pleasurable aspect to living with a show (or any media) for a period of time, letting it simmer subconsciously for a while before you zip thru it all. Media’s power to reveal things about yourself as you digest it n all that

I can’t wait to see what Madame Web reveals to me about myself when I let it wash over me next year. Hopefully it reveals that I have the same magic powers as my girl Cassie Webb.
