I never check RT or reviews. I just see what movies I want to see.

If I’m on the fence about a movie I’ll check reviews. Or if it was a movie I had absolutely no interest in but the reviews make it sound compelling I’ll check something out. For example I never would have seen Beau Is Afraid of the reviews hadn’t told me it was closer to Kaufman than Aster’s first two films.

  5. The stars thing was sort of useful when you had a consistent critic (at your local newspaper, for example, or Ebert or whoever) whose tastes you could follow over the years. I remember getting upset as a kid when our local critic would pan something I liked (probably the Pokemon movie, ha) but as I get older I could actually use his tastes to gauge what I'd want to see.

When I was 16 working at Burger King I was put in charge of a birthday party. I would have rather been sweating over the fryer.

That is the thing, the stars or 10/10 or whatever system was different depending on who you talked to. Maybe your city had a local critic, or maybe they published Ebert, or maybe you read something national like the New York Times.

My fifth grade teacher would only see a movie if it go 4 stars. This was so baffling to me back then and I still wish I could ask her why.

also having 61 scripts and never backing them up is insane

  13. As much fun as it is to dunk on Max Landis, losing that much stuff would really suck. Cloud backup is like $10/month and I'll drop every streaming service before I cancel that.

I'm dunking on him because he's an abuser and a POS and I hope he loses all his work.

  15. Welp, I actually did not know this. Just thought his movies sucked. Carry on with the dunking.

any reasonable person would know that and he's proved time and time again that he isn't reasonable

I look at Rotten Tomatoes all the time, a little less now that there's no app. I feel like I know how to read to make it useful for me and find the user/critics splits interesting and funny sometimes. If there's a comedy/horror movie I'm interested in and it gets a ~60% critics score you can bet it's probably going to be pretty good. If something looks fun and gets like 10-30% critic score and a high users score, you can bet it'll probably will be entertaining and worth a watch, but not life-changing. If I'm slightly interested in something and it get shitty scores on both, I'll probably pass unless someone personally tells me they think I'll like it. If you know what you're looking at and don't take anything as face value or as an actual indicator of what's good or bad, it can be a little fun and useful.

I don’t really “rely” (never really did, I see what I want and decide for myself) on RT anymore, but I can’t lie and say I’m not more intrigued to see a movie like Saw X when I’m shocked to see how it’s scoring over there. I’ll also pass on seeing something in the theater if it’s absolutely getting killed on there.
