Also whether a page like that works depends on the collaborators reading it and whether you earn it in the lead-up to it. Saying it's objectively bad is foolish if it conveys to the filmmakers effectively what should be happening.

sure but the intern reading your script at the production company is gonna throw it in the trash. If you’re making the movie yourself do what you want as long as the cast and crew can understand

No you're just making broad assumptions and setting boundaries for no reason, let creatives be creatives, no one needs to protect them, this is so dumb and ridiculous

Don't record a demo tape with TOO LOUD MUSIC or the record labels won't like you!!

I mean, “rules” in this case kinda exist for a reason and a pretty useful. They’re not immutable absolutes or whatever, lol. But, I think it’s fair (and a fairly common argument) that you’ll probably do better work if you learn the rules before you strategically break them.

Demos and scripts aren’t perfectly analogous, though? lol.

Very much is, in response to Nathan saying it'll get thrown in the trash at a production company if it doesn't follow the rules

It'll definitely get thrown out at a lot of places. It's helped by the fact that the writer is also the producer and director. And also an experienced writer. I took issue with the OP recommending new writers do stuff like that. I agree with Nathan bringing up the cast and crew understanding. As much as it is art, it's also a blueprint not a novel, and ease of reading is vital.

The acceptance rate for scripts is pretty low so doing something like that is a pretty large gamble.

My point is that it's obviously a gamble but no one needs to police anyone away from making their own choices and/or mistakes

If you’re trying to sell your script traditionally through a studio, the stylization of the words on the page will not translate to the literal interns whose job it will be to read your script. I’m not putting boundaries on how anyone should write; like I said if it’s your script you’re shooting yourself all that matters is that the crew and cast can read it and get it. If you’re an established screenwriter you can use all the flourishes you want because someone will pay for your script anyway. But if a script seems confusing or weird to the underpaid (or potentially unpaid) intern with 20 other scripts they have to get through by the end of the week, it is less likely that they’ll want to send it up the ladder.

Read my last post, there's a big difference between "doing this will make your career more difficult" and "follow the rules and don't do this"

    It’s not policing, it’s advice.

What happens when AI starts writing on the scripts?

It'll barely be noticeable from most of the scripts already being submitted

I’m not upset. Honestly, I don’t read scripts. It just reminded me of House of Leaves and I was not the biggest fan of that.

I haven't read that one but I could see how it'd both work and also be irritating

It totally can work. There were parts in House of Leaves that were terrifying and other parts where it was really annoying.

Take this with a grain of salt as I'm not a professional, but I got really into script writing for a while and bought all the software, the books, read as many as I could, and tried to follow all the rules that I see famous directors / writers break all the time. Things like 'we see' and 'the camera moves' etc were all no-no's and they even went as far as having extremely precise margins and uses of cut to language etc. If you're a no-name *unless things drastically changed), you won't even get your script read if the formatting and language used isn't standard.

Also, simplyscripts (used to be? no idea how active it is now) was a great website for reviewing and discussing both unproduced and produced work. I read some scripts on there from really talented people that I wish became actual movies.

  25. I took a glance at it and it kind of looks like the experimentation with form you'd find in a college level creative writing class--*continues scrolling*--whoa what the fuck is going on in this thread
