It is similar to how all sorts of companies will buy prototypes or ideas that they don't want their competitors to get solely to sit on them.

 

There are ways to stop companies sitting on IP. Lots of stories about them trying to get around those too

For those with T-Mobile and pay for movie tickets, there’s a $5 movie ticket to see “Equalizer 3.” I’m boycotting it because it wasn’t called “3qualizer” and also because I don’t have interest in seeing any of those movies.
