Always do the right thing. Supporter

Tik Tok and YouTube bring out the social media aspect, selling their personality as much as whatever their criticism might be. There are plenty of shitty critics who came up in the blog era and did a similar thing, in the age of Tik Tok and YT stardom though, these people are willing to be paid by studios to produce content about the movie via their personal social media, which is different form of content than a real critic’s work

Social media, YouTube, podcasts, etc., definitely lend themselves towards parasocial relationships a bit more.

The way the YouTube "critics" mug for the camera in every thumbnail is so exhausting. Film critics are supposed to be weird shut-ins.

From my understanding, having those weird faces on your thumbnail has been proven to get more clicks.

I don’t say that to totally defend it, just to bring up why it’s so common.

  5. A lot of (if not most) critics are so insufferable to me that I can't even read/watch their reviews for long enough to know if I actually agree with them, let alone agree with them often enough to give them a follow or read everything they write.

Red Letter Media is the only truly good movie/tv related youtube channel. Nearly zero social media presence from any of them and they shill for no one, watch stuff if/when they actually feel like it.

Aside from everything else, MovieTok is just terrible branding. FlickTok was right there

I really miss "What The Flick?!?" which was The Young Turks' film review channel that has been shut down for a few years now. It was the only YouTube film review channel I watched regularly because it was a panel of actual experienced published film critics, and not some fanboy with a nice camera and a greenscreen.

it was Ben Mankiewicz (TCM host), Alonso Duralde (The Wrap), Christie Lemire (RogerEbert.com and one of Ebert's proteges), William Bibbiani (Slashfilm, Collider, Bloody Disgusting), and Matt Atchity (former editor in-chief of Rotten Tomatoes)

  13. I follow a few tiktokers who review things but they're very casual, I guess I wouldn't consider it "film criticism," but then again that label carries a bit of snobbery for me (and is predominantly white cishet male)

Did they recently start doing YouTube? I though they were a podcast only.

The funny thing about Siskel and Ebert is that they were accused of dumbing down film criticisms with their thumb system back in the day but now are titans of the form.

It's been on there for a while now. Down to just Lemire and Duralde though.

They're not youtubers by an means, but the Filmcast podcast uploads their reviews to youtube. I consistently enjoy their discussions.

man I can't find anything but I swear I heard this rerelease was supposed to be out already, but they found an even older print of the original film, so they started remastering it over again?

The people who accused them of that though were the old guard of American film critic that hated anything that wasn't an "intellectual" art film. S&E would come into contention with those guys a lot.

Here is them debating a National Review and New York Magazine critic John Simon about Star Wars. Simon wanted to discredit entire genres, but S&E held the philosophy that all genres have a place, and films should be judged within the context of their genre and intended audience.
