I watched The Perfect Storm for the first time over the weekend. I feel like this movie deserves a 2nd look from critics. The visuals alone are incredible for the time.

I keep getting Daily Wire ads on YouTube. I just got one promoting one of their shitty Gina Carano movies where Ben Shapiro says "our goal is to make movies that challenge the viewer with no agenda other than entertain you, and to fight the left".

lol fighting the left is an agenda. These guys are so full of shit.

I think I’m fine going about my day without thinking about whatever Ben Shapiro or Gina Carano is up to, tbh.

I feel like it has to do with it being one of the few monoculture events we get nowadays. Everyone wants to be a part of the conversation, and it helps that both movies are actually good.

Hey y'all, my friend of 22 years, @Jada is undergoing an emo renaissance and rediscovering/discovering a lot of classics we regularly discuss on the site. She just joined today so I thought I'd introduce her. Be nice!!!

Well, I mean, it depends on how much detail you want here, but I am kinda re-experiencing all the bands I liked in grade school, but this time with a brain that’s not constantly checking-out for *reasons*, so I actually have the bandwidth to Google search and absorb details about the release timing and contexts.

Was kinda sparked by moving to the east coast this last year, and seeing MCR and then LS Dunes a few times, and then saw Thursday, and that REALLY got me sucked in. I’ll be seeing Sparta here in the next few weeks and then also a couple more Thursday shows and I’m just really deep in it right now lol

(I should clarify, I listened to MCR, The Used, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, NFG, Fall Out Boy, and some Simple Plan and Blink 182 in grade school and that’s most of what kinda drew me in initially, but I am starting to really branch out now and it’s been incredibly rewarding)

Okay, well... I like to talk, so here goes lol.

I got pretty much all of my early music exposure, and thus musical tastes, from @JRGComedy in grade-school, where he'd graciously burn me CDs and I would spend hours alone in my room vanishing into those songs. I didn't have the money or the presence-of-mind to really look outside of those CDs, and part of that I am discovering was due a lot to struggling with divorced parents and having no idea why my gender felt so off and having no words to explain it. So, instead I dove into music and tried to find new things about every song every new listen, and that's the cool thing about this stuff, they are so deep and interesting you could spend your life swimming through the chords and lyrics and melodies and never be at a loss for new things to notice.

A lot of the current resurgence was sparked by a pretty recent sequence of life events:
    1. I finally realized/allowed myself to accept I am trans in early 2021
    2. I moved from the PNW I had always lived in to the east coast, literally to the outskirts of DC, and suddenly had access to a TON of good music venues
    3. Connecting with myself more openly, living in a MUCH more diverse environment, and starting to unpack a lot of internalized *garbage*, I began to form my own opinions about politics and the world for the first time, rather than just parroting what I had heard around me that sounded good. (I had always been pretty left-leaning in spirit, but I played the centrist indifference [read: ignorance] card a lot because I didn't want to spend the time thinking about it)
    4. I went to Firefly Festival and saw MCR live for the first time, and not only did I forget how much I loved their music as a kid, I saw Gerard perform in what my wife and I call the "sexy flight attendant/rich widow" look, and AHHH my gay little heart...
    5. My wife started getting REALLY into the MCR fandom, and she essentially constructed 4 of the MCR tour Gerard outfits for us which we wore for Halloween.
    6. She then showed me a lot of Frank Iero's side-projects, and she went to see one of the first L.S. Dunes shows and got to meet Anthony Green.
    7. I started getting really into Frank Iero, and we saw he was doing an event to promote his cousin's tattoo shop in Butler, NJ, so we went up to New Jersey and got a signature and said hi, and scheduled a date to get a flash tattoo designed by him. (they were too busy that day to do it for everyone, so we came back about a month later, and I got to chat openly as a trans woman with his cousin about socialist politics and the early days of pop-punk/emo in NJ, while she was tattooing a drawing of a skull with "I hope I die before they save my soul" on my arm, and that whole experiencewas an incredible look into a culture that had impacted me a lot as a kid, but I had very little actual knowledge about) After that signing we went and ate in the diner that Gerard used to frequent, which was kinda fun.
7a. Found out that New Jersey is BEAUTIFUL
    8. I went to Adjacent Fest in Atlantic City and saw L.S. Dunes, Thursday, Paramore, and a bunch of other bands and learned what being in a crowd of people packed so close together that you can feel everyone moving at once and holding up crowd surfers, and what seeing a show could actually be like when you aren't just sitting/standing at an assigned seat
8a. Anthony Green, in the first like 2 minutes of their first song, came up to the crowd, and literally grabbed my hand and held onto it for what was probably only about 5 seconds, but felt like 5 minutes, and that was surreal.
8b. Started really getting interested in Thursday after that show. They are SO GOOD live, and consistently seeing these emo/pop-punk/post-hardcore bands being vocal about trans rights and not being a fascist to screams of approval was kinda life-changing.
    9. My wife showed me Life On The Murder Scene and some other MCR videos and my love for recording and performing and music started showing up in full force again. Then she and I started listening to "Where Are Your Boys Tonight" as an audio book and getting some of the actual detailed context for the early days of these bands and the community made it even more interesting.
    10. Just finished travelling to Millvale, PA and Cincinnati, OH following a couple of L.S. Dunes shows and I literally got to sing directly into the microphone at one of those shows because Anthony has a habit of throwing the mic into the crowd in some songs and he made eye contact with me and smiled really big a few times and I have never experienced live music like this ever.

We will be seeing Sparta next Monday at Ottobar, so I'm really digging into them right now and their openers are Geoff Rickly (!!!!!!!) and Zeta (who I haven't heard of), and I cannot wait. And then we will be seeing Thursday two more times this year and I'm just kinda losing myself to this world rn.

    Rediscovering:
Jimmy Eat World (listened to some as a kid, but never really got deep into them)
Yellowcard (listened to some as a kid, but never really got deep into them)
New Found Glory (one of my first favorite bands, but listening now with more context)
Alkaline Trio (didn't listen to much until high school when we played a few covers of them, and I remember liking them but never dug into them much)
Good Charlotte (one of my first favorite bands, but listening now with more context)
Sum 41(one of my first favorite bands, but listening now with more context)
Taking Back Sunday (they impacted my tastes more than I realized, so I'm trying to listen to them more attentively)
The Used (one of my first favorite bands, but listening now with more context)
My Chemical Romance (one of my first favorite bands, but listening now with more context)
Fall Out Boy (one of my first favorite bands, but listening now with more context)
Motion City Soundtrack (was very into My Dinosaur Life, but now trying to listen to their earlier stuff with context)
The Academy Is... (really liked Santi, and listened to their other stuff quite a bit, but never had the time context for it)

    New to me:
Saves the Day - (learned about from "Where Are Your Boys Tonight")
Thursday - (current obsession, particularly War All the Time, since that's one of the shows I'll be seeing soon)
Midtown - (can't believe I hadn't listened to this before)
Dashboard Confessional - (a bit lower energy than I'm currently focusing in on, but wow these guys are good)
At the Drive-In - (learned about from looking into Sparta)
Something Corporate - (learned about from "Where Are Your Boys Tonight")
The Stereo - (this one is very intriguing and I'm probably gonna deep dive into them soon)
Sparta - (seeing them next week and Wiretap Scars has wormed its way into my head and won't leave. Such a unique and fascinating sound)
The Ataris - (was told about them a few times, but never actually listened to them)
Head Automatica - (learned about from @JRGComedy this last week)
Straylight Run - (learned about from @JRGComedy this last week)
Circa Survive (learned about looking into history of Anthony Green)
Acceptance - (learned about from @JRGComedy this last week)
Cartel - (learned about from @JRGComedy this last week, and I think I was recommended it several years ago, but just never got around to it)

Oh, also, if anyone has any Thursday-adjacent or like 2000, New Jersey emo/post-hardcore stuff to recommend, I would absolutely be interested. I am trying really hard to actively push myself to listen to as much new stuff as I can to catch up/get some more exposure.

Listen to Thrice right now (I'd recommend the album The Artist In The Ambulance considering its style is adjacent to many of these bands and then Vheissu to branch out), it's a no brainer after seeing all these namedrops. Happy to have you there and rejoiced to see you indulging in this culture and having such a blast discovering and rediscovering all of these bands so precious to my and many of us hearts.

  21. As for more post-hardcore/emo adjacent stuff in the vein of the bands listed, you'd have fun digging into Anberlin, Emery, Funeral For A Friend, Alexisonfire, The Starting Line, Relient K, Emanuel, Finch, Beloved... I could go on and on but those are some chorus.fm staples mixed with less known bands that all left a mark in the scene.

I'm happy to have another good community to connect with. That's been another very big thing I'm trying to do more frequently. I spent a LONG time thinking I didn't really need other people outside my closest friends, and it's kinda caused me to become very very lonely and disconnected as I get older... go figure. Actually connecting with the queer community in various ways has helped me realize just how important it really is, so I am trying to be more involved in things now.
