  2. I know Alamo is just one chain but imagine WGA, SAG, and the theater workers all on strike

I found myself recently kind of lamenting the death of Will Smith's movie star career, at least his King of 4th of July era. The Oscar bait never really worked, the high-concept sci-fi action has failed for him recently, and he didn’t make a splash in his attempt at a comic book movie (not his fault that Suicide Squad sucked). I don't really doubt he'll have some sort of comeback, but what kind of vehicle does everyone think will finally work for him again and recapture that magic? Or is he actually done?

Citadel is a very corny and cliche spy show that somehow cost $300 million.

A time machine for when he can make a buddy comedy and have it be viable

Bad Boys For Life made half a billion right before covid, and #4 is being filmed right now. He clearly never should've strayed from comedic genre films

He’s actively rejected the most interesting offers he’s received. He studied the top grossing films of all time to inform his career choices. Inherently, his approach is conservative and low ceiling, artistically. Best I can see him doing is maybe a Ryan Coogler movie down the line somewhere but given the current pop culture trajectory it’ll probably be a CGI Lady and the Tramp remake or something

In terms of a Will Smith vehicle equaling boffo BO, or even coming close to touching the era I mention, no, I don't think King Richard making $40M on a $50M budget really worked out all that well. Same with Ali. Pursuit of Happyness did make a lot more than I thought, not sure how much that is consider Oscar bait though.

I guess Aladdin did make a billion dollars, but again I don't think that was really a testament to Will Smith still being able to open a movie.

Aladdin made a billion dollars but like all the live action Disney remakes, not one person has thought about it since then

Will Smiths career has suffered from Hollywoods move from building movies around a star to sell tickets to milking IP. He was also at his best when his movie's outlook was look how cool it is to be Will Smith, recently it doesnt look like Wills having a cool time and neither are we.

This nails his appeal and what's been missing for so long. Hopefully with him getting the Oscar he wanted and Bad Boys 3 being successful, he realizes this and starts choosing better vehicles that showcase what audiences loved about him. You're right though those types of movies are few and far between these days.

This is a stretch but because hes plays himself on screen, more than other actors you can see a trajectory of his personal life in his roles. From fun, confient and free in his 20s/30s then to role model/heroic as he shifts his identiy towards being a father to now where it seems like hes not doing well in his personal life and getting lost in his identity.
