I was so annoyed by this post I forgot to respond. Happy strike day! Hopefully you know what you’re talking about by now

I used to be a documentary/TV/BTS camera op and now I’m an editor full time

I just worry how effective the writers strike will be in the age of streaming. There is more content out there than a human being could watch in a lifetime. People won't have trouble finding something new to them, even if it was made a few years ago

 

Politicians were crying that there was nothing to watch during lockdown.

 

I’m saying this aggrieved writer on the Rizzoli and Isles staff making piles of cash you’ve invented in your head does not represent the majority of the guild that is striking for very legitimate and concerning reasons, and so to say in the same sentence that you both support an issue and that it makes you roll your eyes is a bit dumb as hell

 

They’re going to have to come to the table if they want their tentpole shows. Netflix has reality shows, but people will want “Stranger Things.” Paramount needs “Yellowstone.” Disney needs “Star Wars”/MCU content.

The first season of Breaking Bad hadn't even aired yet. The strike is why the first season was cut short. It also wasn't considered a prestige show for a couple more years.

It will definitely affect way more than just TV. But whatever nonsense we get is worth the writers getting a fair agreement with studios. Plus the studios have been preparing for this with stockpiles of scripts. The big problem is they won’t be able to do any rewrites.

Can you imagine if they did?! I wish they would. That would show the country just how powerful collective bargaining can be if everyone is in on the same page about it, leading to even more industries doing the same (or at least attempting to do so.)

 

I mean, sure. But it’s a pretty shitty worldview that nobody needs to have.

 

I’m not sure about others, but some unions, like DGA and WGA, have “no strike” clauses in their contracts that penalize gestures of solidarity. That said, DGA and SAG-AFTRA contracts are up 6/30
