Coppola only did The Godfather Part III because he was broke. It wouldn't be a terrible film on its own but it contradicts the important character arcs.

 

I haven't seen Godfather 1 or 2. I'm gonna start with 3 just to get it out of the way.

 

Hello, just to cover all bases.

I like writing and writing about things. I started a new thing to write one thing a day (Film / TV / Music) and called it Soft Hum Productions. Partly irony because production company names are stupid at the start of Films and TV and partly to pay homage to the art of 'secret' songs and the perfect one on the end of As Tall As Lions self titled album.

Give a follow if you like! Written about Aftersun, Banshees of Inisherin and Thank You For Smoking so far entertainment wise (things happen in 3s!) and just finished my music three so TV up next.

It was “lost” for years but Visual Vengeance put it out on BD last year. Rarelust might have it? I don’t think it’s streaming

Do you think it’s necessary to watch something to critique it? Can you not like Velma without watching it? Or should you be obligated to consume it for context? Some people I know hate Morbius, but haven’t watched it or given it a chance. I haven’t either, but just some examples…

 

Yea, to give any meaningful critique on the work itself I think you’d have to have watched/read/listened to at least some of it.

Like I’ve heard Velma and Morbius are bad and I have no desire to watch either based on what I’ve heard and me not enjoying similar things that have come out, but that’s as far as my critique can go.

You could talk about both in the larger context of the industry’s trends towards exhaustive mining of superhero content or exploiting nostalgia without seeing them, but that’s slightly different than a critique of the work itself.

 

It is impossible to see everything. Everyone ends up using some sort of filter to dismiss things, even if they don't realize it.

I don't need to see Transformers 6 or MILF Manor to know what they are about or what they entail just like I don't need to stick my hand in fire to know that it hurts. There is wisdom in mass opinions, and to pretend otherwise just wastes time. Of course there is a tiny chance that Morbius is actually good or that Citizen Kane is secretly terrible, but you are better off watching things that your intuition tells you are worth it.

 

If you wanna give a detailed critique, as in, a well written essay or whatever, you have to watch it. Otherwise? Nah. You can 100% tell sometimes when a thing is not for you, and even criticize aspects of it, without sitting down and spending however many hours on it. (And, we all have finite hours before going to the grave!)

Also, with some of these examples… it’s worth noting a stream is a stream & a ticket sale is a ticket sale to these people. One individual person’s choice in these big media outings is such a tiny drop in the bucket, but if enough people hate-watch a thing, that can still be potentially measured as success for the project, lol. So, idk, maybe better NOT to give Velma a shot?

 

Sometimes not the criticism but the fans of something can give you a bad vibe. I didn't need to see it to know I disliked Rick and Morty, even before the stuff about Roiland came out. and idk, Joker might actually be a decent movie, I'm not gonna watch it, the fans creep me out. That might make my opinion of it a less "valid" critique but I don't really care. I don't need to watch things to know they're not for me. and, obviously, I try to avoid anything that's known to be blatantly homophobic/racist/etc
