I saw Game Night opening weekend lol. I remember people online being into it when it came out. But yeah I stopped using letterboxd because of that “style” of review because it doesn’t engage with the movie and what I liked about letterboxd was seeing a bunch of different people say what they thought about movies

I only use Letterboxd to catalog the movies I watch, find new movies, and then occasionally I will skim through the reviews to make sure most of them are at least 3 stars before I add a new one to my watchlist (unless the reviews shit on a movie that I know is already supposed to be shitty haha.) But yeah, I really don't put much effort into reading reviews for literally anything because it's a 50/50 chance I will like it or I won't.

I like reading reviews because I like reading people engage critically with art

the only time i like reading reviews is after i've already seen the movie because it can help articulate things that i can't, or seeing how someone else interprets it can be really interesting. but i feel like when people read reviews beforehand, they watch the whole movie with those thoughts in mind and then they just regurgitate the same opinions someone else had rather than actually forming their own first.

one of my friends hates horror movies, so she will read reviews and spoilers before the movie so she knows what to expect. (i learned this AFTER i saw Goodnight Mommy with her) and at the end of the movie she leaned over to all of our friends and said "you guys didn't see that twist coming!??" as if she was shocked that we were surprised, and then she said "i read the spoilers for it, but still..." we don't invite her to horror movies anymore haha.

but yeah, that's why i don't like reading reviews other than just vague ones before i go into anything because i don't want all those background thoughts going on in my brain.

Yep, this is how I approach reviews too. The only time I'll check out reviews beforehand is if it's a movie I was on the fence about seeing in the first place. If it's a movie I know I want to see, I avoid reviews until after I've seen it and thought about it. A well-written review can help me to understand my own feeling about a film. I also like to read positive and negative reviews so I can get a range of perspectives on it. It's fun to read different interpretations of art!

It’s fairly easy to comb through and find some legit, well-written, and really good reviews on literally every movie; I’ll look for ones from people that loved it and also hated it.

Reviews are for after you've watched it.

This is very important. Finding people who have the opposite view of you will help you become a more critical thinker; it doesn't have to change your opinion but it gives you alternate points of view. That is why it is always so puzzling how angry people get when someone criticizes the big new thing of the moment.

Yeah, only after I’ve seen it. Favorites to do a dive on lately were The Whale (hated) and Babylon (loved) — really enjoy the opposing views; to see where someone is coming from and possibly altering my view of the film or helping me at least see it from a different angle.

As artistic representation becomes more diverse, reading those points of view also becomes important. My favorite current writer is probably Michael Koresky, who is gay. He approaches films from a different perspective from myself, and I learn more about things I may have missed from reading his views. The same goes for female writers or Black writers or people from different generations or anything else that differs.

Since we're on the subject, here's another Patrick H Willems video talking about the importance of film criticism. He also gives a list of solid critics if people are looking for some to check out.

This might seem backwards, but it can be good to find a critic or person who you almost always disagree with. Any time I hate a movie and go to find it on Letterboxd, there is @SpyKi with a 5 star review. A nice guy but complete opposite tastes often.
